The 2027 FIM Speedway Grand Prix season will culminate in a two-day, title-deciding double-header at Gillman Speedway in Adelaide on 29 and 30 October 2027, organisers have revealed. The move marks the first time since 2017 that the world championship will be decided in Australia and the first season in which more than one Grand Prix will be held beyond Europe.
Ends of the calendar shifted to the southern hemisphere
The announcement signals a notable shift in the geographical scope of the series. The 2027 championship will include rounds that return to established European venues while also travelling to Australia for the climactic finale. Promoters say the double-header will be the first occasion in a decade that the series stages events outside Europe and the first time two overseas rounds have taken place in the same season.
Organisers confirmed a number of venues already familiar to fans. Prague, Wroclaw, Riga, Vojens and Torun return from the 2026 calendar, while PGE Narodowy in Warsaw and Donji Kraljevec rejoin the series. The full 11-round championship will be completed once an additional round has been confirmed.
| Round | Venue | Date (announced) |
|---|---|---|
| Season opener | Donji Kraljevec | 1 May 2027 |
| Poland | PGE Narodowy, Warsaw | 15 May 2027 |
| Great Britain | Ipswich | 14 August 2027 |
| Season finale (double-header) | Gillman Speedway, Adelaide | 29–30 October 2027 |
Domestic success and timing
The return to Australia follows a period of strong results for the national team. Australia lifted the 2025 FIM Speedway of Nations and the 2026 FIM Speedway World Cup, and the sport’s profile in the country has been buoyed by recent individual success. The last time the world title was decided in Australia was at Marvel Stadium, Melbourne, in 2017 when Jason Doyle clinched the championship.
Mayfield Sports Events, which acquired the championships a year ago, emphasised the decision responds to demand from fans and national stakeholders.
“One of the main questions we have received from the fans since we acquired the championships a year ago is when we would be going back to Australia, so it is an absolute pleasure to make that dream a reality in October 2027,”the company’s founder said, praising support from Gillman Speedway, the South Australian government, Motorcycling Australia and commercial partners.
- Adelaide double-header: 29–30 October 2027 will host the final two rounds.
- Notable dates: Donji Kraljevec on 1 May and Warsaw on 15 May; Ipswich stages the British GP on 14 August.
- Team events: the FIM Speedway of Nations final is scheduled for Västervik on 28 August 2027.
Young riders and expansion of the series
Alongside the senior championship, the SGP2 series — the under-21 world championship pathway — will visit Riga, Ipswich and Vojens, giving emerging riders exposure at established venues. The organisers described the Adelaide double-header as an opportunity to showcase both the sport’s historic ties to Australia and its development prospects among younger competitors.
Promoters framed the schedule as the result of collaborative work between venue operators, government and commercial partners, citing Monster Energy and the FIM among backers. They also pointed to a broader strategy of taking marquee motorsport events to markets outside Europe, although one round of the 11 remains to be confirmed.
For fans and riders alike, the prospect of a season decided over two successive nights in Adelaide introduces new variables: travel logistics, jet lag and track differences will all shape the championship fight. With a crowded calendar and the growing international reach of the series, organisers must balance sporting integrity with the commercial and promotional benefits of staging rounds in new territories.
Details on ticketing, broadcast arrangements and the as-yet-unconfirmed round are expected to follow from the FIM and promoters in the coming months.
