Srinagar: Security arrangements across the Kashmir Valley have been strengthened ahead of Independence Day on 15 August, with increased deployment, area domination and access-control measures being put in place in districts where events will be held.
Preparations concentrated in Srinagar and north Kashmir
The main Independence Day function in Srinagar will be held at Bakshi Stadium, where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is scheduled to preside and take the salute. Officials said additional security personnel have been posted in and around the stadium and at key approach routes to ensure the event proceeds peacefully.
Across the city, teams have established temporary security checkpoints and conducted frisking at multiple locations as part of routine pre-event screening. Traffic management plans were also reported to be in place to regulate movement on principal routes leading to the venue.
North Kashmir review meeting
In Sopore, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the North Kashmir Range, Vinod Kumar, convened a security review at Police District Sopore. The meeting addressed deployment plans, area domination, intelligence sharing and coordination among agencies, according to police statements.
Senior Superintendent of Police Iftkhar Talib presented a detailed briefing on measures already carried out in the run-up to Independence Day and the planned actions for the remaining days. The briefing covered intensified checking, patrolling, operational preparedness and precautionary arrangements across the district.

The DIG directed officers to remain vigilant, strengthen protection at vulnerable locations, intensify patrolling and checking, and ensure effective coordination and timely exchange of intelligence among the agencies involved.

Earlier this month, the Jammu and Kashmir General Administration Department (GAD) issued a circular asking officials to attend the principal Independence Day ceremonies in Srinagar and Jammu. The circular described attendance as a duty of government servants on the occasion.
Police spokesmen said reviews also examined access control, crowd management and medical contingency arrangements for the ceremonies. Officials emphasised that the security posture aims to facilitate peaceful observance of the national holiday while maintaining normal civic life to the extent possible.
