Coordinated operations net large consignments; arrests made at Six Mile and ISBT
Guwahati — Two major anti-narcotics operations in Guwahati within 24 hours have yielded large consignments of heroin and psychotropic pills, police officials said on Friday. The Special Task Force (STF) and city police intercepted a truck near the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) and raided an apartment at Chachal in the Six Mile area, recovering narcotic consignments and arresting several suspects.
In the Six Mile operation, an STF team led by ASP Kalyan Pathak seized 10 kg of heroin from an apartment at Chachal and arrested a man identified as Hardeep Singh, described by police as a veteran drugs peddler and a resident of Ludhiana, Punjab. According to the officer, the suspect had come to Assam to transport the consignment onward to Punjab.
“We had information that a massive consignment of narcotics had exchanged hands and that the plan was to take it to Punjab. Accordingly, we raided an apartment at Cachal where the person was camping. The seized heroin weighs 10 kg and is worth around ₹80 lakh in the international market,” ASP Kalyan Pathak said.
Separately, Guwahati Police intercepted a truck near the ISBT that was carrying 10 soap cases of heroin and 1,40,000 YABA tablets. Two peddlers were arrested in that operation. The seized material from the truck has been valued at approximately ₹39.4 crore, according to the report.
Combining the haul figures cited in police statements and local media reports, the total worth of narcotics seized in Guwahati over the 24-hour period has been put at nearly ₹120 crore. Police said vehicles used in the trafficking— including a Mahindra Thar recovered during the Six Mile raid — are being examined as part of the investigation.
Police action, investigations and local impact
Officials said the operations were based on actionable intelligence and involved multiple units coordinating to intercept both the movement of consignments and persons allegedly involved in trafficking. The STF-led raid targeted the place where the consignment was reportedly being held prior to onward transportation, while the ISBT interception disrupted another attempt to move narcotics out of the city by road.
Investigative steps now include forensic examination of the recovered substances, scrutiny of mobile and travel records of the arrested suspects, and tracing of supply and distribution networks that may link to other states. Police did not immediately release further details on whether the seized consignments are connected to transnational routes or local networks, and enquiries remain ongoing.
- Six Mile (Chachal): STF raid — 10 kg heroin seized; one arrest (Hardeep Singh); vehicle recovered.
- ISBT interception: Truck stopped — 10 soap cases of heroin and 1,40,000 YABA tablets; two arrests; seizure value ~₹39.4 crore.
- Total reported seizure value: Nearly ₹120 crore from Guwahati in the past 24 hours, per police and media reports.
The magnitude of the seizures, particularly of synthetic tablets such as YABA, highlights concerns among law-enforcement and public-health officials about the spread of psychotropic substances in the region. YABA, a methamphetamine-based tablet, has been the focus of seizures across the North-East in recent years and is often linked to organised trafficking networks that operate across state and international borders.

Wider policing and community concerns
Assam has been a transit and consumption point for various narcotics, shaped by its geographic location, porous borders and transport corridors. Recent large-scale hauls in Guwahati will likely intensify scrutiny of highway checkpoints, inter-state bus routes and urban safe houses used to conceal consignments. Police sources said they will continue follow-up raids as forensic and digital evidence is analysed.
For residents, the twin operations underline law-enforcement efforts to clamp down on organised narcotics trafficking in the city. Authorities have urged citizens to report suspicious movements and properties to police control rooms and local stations while the investigation continues.
Further details, including charges framed and judicial custody status of those arrested, are expected as prosecutorial processes move forward.
