Evening rushes turn arterial roads into choke points
Kochi's roads turned increasingly congested this week as a pre-Onam shopping rush combined with ongoing roadworks and infrastructure diversions reduced vehicular capacity on several key corridors. Short-staffed traffic police are moving personnel from other units in an effort to manage the jams, but officers warned the situation could deteriorate further over the coming weekend when a two-day holiday is expected to increase travel.
Residents and office-goers reported severe delays across central stretches of the city during peak evening hours. The worst affected corridors included Sahodaran Ayyappan Road, Banerji Road, the Edappally–Kundannoor bypass, Foreshore Road and Shanmugham Road, where vehicular movement repeatedly slowed to a standstill, according to the report.
- Commuters reported being stranded for hours during evening peak travel.
- Traffic diversions for Metro Phase 2, highway upgrades and other projects have reduced road capacity in several locations.
- Police are reallocating personnel from other units to manage the surge but cautioned of further deterioration this weekend.
“Reaching any destination urgently in the evening has become almost impossible since last weekend. On Saturday, both main and pocket roads were gridlocked,” said Jefrin Thomas, who works in Kaloor.
Local residents described extended queues and near standstill conditions at several junctions. In the Kaloor area, commuters reported total gridlock between the North Overbridge and Kaloor, while traffic on the corridor from Ernakulathappan Temple to Shanmugham Road also came to a halt during peak periods. Vyttila, which sees heavy inter-city movement, remained affected despite recent removal of concrete medians under the flyover.
“There is a total gridlock from Elamkulam to Vyttila. Vehicles are stuck along the Tripunithura–Ernakulam route as well,” said T N Prathapan, a resident. Another commuter, Lija Varghese, said diversions around the High Court roundabout were exacerbating delays for those travelling from Vypeen to the city, pointing to changes in traffic flow as a key cause of extended travel times.
Infrastructure works and diversions cited as major causes
Officials cited a combination of factors that have reduced effective road capacity at a time when shopping-related traffic has spiked. Ongoing works include Kochi Metro Phase 2 construction along the Kakkanad corridor; highway development at Edappally; and closure of the roundabout near the High Court to facilitate construction in front of the Police Club. These projects, combined with persistent potholes and local bottlenecks, have contributed to the current congestion.
| Affected stretch | Issue reported |
|---|---|
| Sahodaran Ayyappan Road | Evening standstills; heavy shopper traffic |
| Banerji Road | Severe congestion during peak hours |
| Edappally–Kundannoor bypass | Reduced capacity due to highway works |
| Foreshore Road / Shanmugham Road | Gridlock from high evening traffic |
Traffic police sources emphasised that the usual evening commute was compounded by shoppers heading to malls, markets and textile stores for Onam purchases. With the festival less than a fortnight away and a two-day holiday predicted to draw larger crowds, authorities are bracing for further strain on the road network.
Commuters urged clearer traffic management plans and better communication on diversions ahead of the holiday weekend. Several expressed frustration at ad hoc detours that funnel traffic into already congested feeder roads, and called for timely updates from civic authorities and the traffic police to help plan alternate routes.
The combination of seasonal shopping demand and long-term infrastructure upgrades has exposed pinch points across Kochi’s transport grid. As the city prepares for increased movement in the run-up to Onam, residents and authorities face a test of coordination between civic agencies, police and project contractors to mitigate delays and keep essential movement flowing.
