Saskatoon classic car parade brings Show & Shine to five care homes

Organizers are taking dozens of vintage vehicles on the road during Rock 102’s Show & Shine Weekend so residents who cannot make it downtown can hear and see the classics from shaded balconies and parking lots.

The roar of engines and gleam of chrome will come to those who can’t make it to downtown Saskatoon this weekend as organisers take the Rock 102 Show & Shine on the road to five local care homes.

Bringing the show to those who can’t attend

The Rock 102 Show & Shine Weekend draws large crowds to the city each summer, but organisers say not every resident can make the trip. To reach people living in long‑term care and supportive living, a separate parade of dozens of classic vehicles will visit five care facilities across the city on Saturday.

The event — called a “Classic Cruise” by its organiser — is not formally part of the downtown Show & Shine, but was scheduled to coincide with the weekend when several car clubs are already in Saskatoon.

Why organisers say the drive matters

Brian Kendall, an entertainer and the event’s organiser, said the mobile show answers a simple problem: many care homes do not have the room to stage a car show on site. He pointed to Oliver Lodge as an example where a parking lot makes an on‑site display possible, but neighbouring Oliver Place cannot support a similar setup.

“The advantage of that is that the senior homes can set up in the shade and on their balconies and have the cars come to them. They get to hear the sound as well as see all the different classics.”

Kendall said he was inspired by motorcycle groups that staged drive‑by shows during the COVID‑19 pandemic, but wanted to add another element.

“One thing I noticed when I did the motorcycle (events) was the sound of the vehicles is absent from car shows,”

He argued the audible element of classic cars adds memories and emotion. Kendall noted the appeal runs beyond men who owned or drove such vehicles; women in the community also have strong recollections tied to classics, and the sensory experience can be powerful.

Benefits both ways

Organisers say the parade will be a benefit for viewers and owners alike. For residents, it provides a safe, shaded way to enjoy an event they might otherwise miss. For car owners, the cruise offers an opportunity to demonstrate that their vehicles are meant to be driven, rather than kept stationary.

Local volunteers and car clubs have a history of adapting to the needs of community members. During the pandemic, motorcycle groups organised stationary displays outside care homes; this parade builds on that idea by letting the cars roll past so residents can hear engines and enjoy a fuller sensory experience.

Organisers hope the Classic Cruise will create moments of joy and memory for residents who once rode in or loved these cars, and provide an accessible way to participate in one of Saskatoon’s summer traditions.

Details about the specific care facilities and timing were not published with the announcement. The parade is scheduled for Saturday, concurrent with the downtown Show & Shine activities.
