Manitoba RCMP say the death of a four-year-old girl found at a rural home early Sunday morning is being treated as suspicious, and investigators have launched a Major Crime Services probe after two other toddlers from the same residence were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Police called to child in medical distress

Provincial Mounties say officers were initially responding to a report of a child in medical distress when they arrived at the property at about 7:45 a.m. The home is located more than 110 kilometres outside Winnipeg. Despite resuscitation efforts by emergency personnel, the four-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other girls, aged about one and two, were also inside the residence and were taken to hospital. One of those children was described by police as being in critical condition at the time of transport; RCMP later reported both have been stabilised.

Major Crime Services, forensic teams on scene

Because of the circumstances surrounding the death and the injuries to the other children, Manitoba RCMP called in their Major Crime Services (MCS) unit to take over the investigation. Forensic Identification Services and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will also be involved, the RCMP said.

“We know the community will be searching for answers as to what occurred within this household,” Supt. Rob Lasson, officer in charge of MCS, said in a news release.

Supt. Lasson described the events as “troubling,” and officials said investigators will work alongside the medical examiner to establish the cause and manner of death and to determine how the children sustained their injuries.

Community concerns and next steps

RCMP say MCS will lead the inquiry and that investigators will conduct a thorough examination of the scene and work with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine cause of death. No charges have been announced.

Police have not publicly identified the children, the family or the community where the incident occurred. Investigators appealed to anyone with relevant information or footage to come forward to assist the probe.

The case has already prompted heightened concern in neighbouring communities, where residents frequently rely on timely updates from provincial and local policing services in serious incidents involving children. Authorities urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation continues.

This is an active and developing investigation. WE NEWS will update this story as police release further information.
