Four teenagers were killed Sunday evening after the vehicle they were travelling in was struck by a van near Winnipeg Beach, about 60 kilometres north of Winnipeg, RCMP said in a Monday release.
Collision details and immediate aftermath
Police were called to the scene at 9:15 p.m. after the crash at the intersection of Highway 8 and Provincial Road 229. RCMP said the westbound vehicle was crossing Highway 8 while travelling on PR 229 when it was struck by a southbound van. Both vehicles entered the southwest ditch; one rolled and came to rest on its roof.
Three 18‑year‑olds and a 17‑year‑old were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims are identified by RCMP only by age and hometowns: an 18‑year‑old woman from Winnipeg (the driver of the westbound vehicle), an 18‑year‑old man from Gimli, an 18‑year‑old woman from Sandy Hook, and a 17‑year‑old man from Ear Falls, Ont.
Injuries, investigation and traffic control
Four people in the van — including the 49‑year‑old male driver, a woman and two children — sustained only minor injuries, RCMP said. A traffic reconstructionist has been called to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The RCMP release notes that the intersection has stop signs for westbound and eastbound traffic on PR 229. Authorities have not released additional details about speed, impairment or other contributing factors as the probe continues.
Local leaders urge change
The crash renewed long‑running safety concerns about that intersection. Winnipeg Beach Mayor Terry Calof said the site has seen multiple serious collisions in recent months and urged action.

RCMP and municipal officials have previously recorded other serious incidents at the same junction. In July, a two‑vehicle collision at the intersection resulted in the death of an 86‑year‑old man. Another incident the previous September involved an SUV that reportedly failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with a semi‑truck.

The deaths of four teenagers has reverberated in small communities across the Interlake and in Winnipeg, where at least one of the victims lived. Family or community supports have not been detailed publicly by RCMP.
As the RCMP continues its investigation, municipal and provincial authorities will face renewed pressure to review safety at the intersection — whether through increased enforcement, clearer signage, traffic control changes or engineering solutions.
