Fatal collision closes Thorncliffe Park intersection
A 42-year-old Toronto traffic agent was killed Thursday morning after being struck by a dump truck while directing traffic in Thorncliffe Park, police say. The collision happened near Millwood Road and Overlea Boulevard, an intersection that was closed while investigators examined the scene.
Toronto police said officers were called shortly after 9 a.m. to reports that a person had been hit by a vehicle. Duty Insp. Peter Wallace told reporters later in the day that the traffic agent was pronounced dead at the scene. The death has put renewed attention on the risks faced by workers who operate in live traffic lanes while helping vehicles move through Toronto intersections.
According to police, the dump truck was travelling south on Millwood Road and turning left onto eastbound Overlea Boulevard when it struck the agent. The agent was at the intersection directing traffic at the time. Police later identified the vehicle in a news release as a blue Kenworth dump truck connected to a private company.

Driver remained at scene as investigation continued
The 33-year-old dump-truck driver stayed at the location and spoke with investigators, police said. No charges had been announced in the information released Thursday. Police have not provided further details about the circumstances leading up to the collision or said whether any charges are being considered.
The intersection was shut down during the police investigation but had reopened by Thursday afternoon. The closure affected a local crossing in a neighbourhood where traffic agents are visible to drivers and pedestrians while managing movement through busy roads. Police did not say how long the scene examination lasted or whether additional witnesses had come forward.
“This is a heartbreaking incident and our thoughts are with the victim's family, loved ones and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”
Wallace said the victim played an important role in keeping the city moving safely and worked closely with Toronto police, including members of traffic services. Police extended condolences to the victim’s family, friends and colleagues as investigators continued their work.
Colleagues gather at scene
About 20 traffic agents from across the city gathered at the intersection to mourn, according to their union local. Their presence underscored the loss within a group whose work takes place close to moving vehicles and often requires directing traffic from within the roadway.
For residents, the collision is a reminder that traffic control at intersections depends not only on signals and signs, but also on people working directly in the flow of vehicles. In this case, police say the agent was carrying out that role when the dump truck made its turn. The investigation remains ongoing, and the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision have not been fully released.
