A different view of Cornwall’s visitor favourites
A ranking of attractions in Cornwall, U.K., has placed lesser-known and often free-to-visit sites ahead of several internationally recognized landmarks. The findings are based on Google reviews and concern the British county, not Cornwall, Ont., a distinction that matters for local readers encountering the list online.
The study, conducted by web experts SEO Backlinks, examined 79 attractions with at least 300 Google reviews each. Researchers said they carried out more than 3,000 Google Maps searches across the United Kingdom on Oct. 20 before conducting additional searches by attraction name to find well-known sites that may not have appeared in the initial results.
In total, the ranking drew on 222,080 reviews. Researchers calculated each attraction’s precise average from its one- through five-star reviews, rather than relying on the rounded score displayed by Google. That approach produced small differences between attractions that might otherwise appear to have identical ratings.
Top-ranked sites
The highest-rated attraction was the Flicka Foundation Donkey Sanctuary near Penryn. The charity rescue centre recorded an average of 4.89 stars from 1,101 reviews. It was followed by The Story of Emily in St Ive, with a 4.87 average from 346 reviews, and the Screech Owl Sanctuary and Animal Park near St Columb, which recorded 4.82 from 2,191 reviews.
| Attraction | Average rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Flicka Foundation Donkey Sanctuary | 4.89 | 1,101 |
| The Story of Emily | 4.87 | 346 |
| Screech Owl Sanctuary and Animal Park | 4.82 | 2,191 |
| Lanhydrock House and Garden | 4.75 | 7,339 |
The results put Lanhydrock House and Garden 13th overall, with an average of 4.75 from 7,339 reviews. Other major destinations appeared farther down the table. St Michael’s Mount ranked 31st with 4.68 from 10,333 reviews, while Tintagel Castle was 45th with 4.59 from 19,686 reviews.
What the ranking leaves out
The research was not designed as a complete measure of every place visitors might enjoy. Shops, pubs, restaurants, hotels, theatres, event venues, sports and leisure facilities, play venues, town parks, national parks, war memorials and natural features such as beaches, hills and lakes were excluded. Attractions closed to visitors at the time of the research were also left out.
Sites with more than one Google listing were combined in the analysis. The researchers specifically cited Land’s End and the Eden Project as examples of attractions whose listings were merged. Land’s End ranked 78th, with an average of 4.21 from 31,887 reviews, demonstrating how a large volume of feedback can produce a very different result from public familiarity or name recognition.
The list therefore reflects online visitor sentiment within a defined group of attractions, rather than an official tourism assessment or a broad verdict on Cornwall. Its strongest message is that review scores can elevate smaller charitable, educational and animal-focused destinations over famous landmarks. For Cornwall, Ont., readers, the ranking is best understood as a report about the British county that shares the city’s name—not a guide to attractions in eastern Ontario.
