PRIESKA — A significant milestone for the long-stalled Prieska Copper Zinc Mine was reached on Monday when Orion Minerals announced that the initial $40 million tranche of a broader $250 million metals offtake funding arrangement with Glencore had become unconditional. The company said the payment will allow mining to begin on the near‑surface ‘Uppers’ orebody.
What the funding unlocks
Orion reported that the $40m tranche will finance early works, dewatering of historical workings and mobilisation to allow development and construction of the Uppers zone. The company set a target of reporting first metal by the end of 2027 from this phase.
"Finalising the offtake deal with Glencore had been a lengthy and detailed process," said Tony Lennox, managing director and chief executive of Orion. He added it marked "a major milestone for Orion and a pivotal moment in our transition from explorer to developer and producer".
Under the terms of the agreement reported by Orion, the company will supply all bulk concentrates from both the Uppers and the deeper Deeps zones — the Uppers for five years and the Deeps for 10 years. The Deeps development is contingent on further funding and more complex infrastructure works, including dewatering at depth.
Funding gap and next steps
While tranche A is now unconditional, Orion said the remaining $210m of the Glencore facility remains subject to conditions. The company reported it will continue to engage with existing and new funding partners to secure the balance of project finance required to develop the Deeps — a stage Orion and its advisers describe as the larger and more technically demanding part of the project.
- Tranche A: $40m — now unconditional; enables Uppers development.
- Tranche B: $210m — subject to further conditions and financing arrangements for the Deeps.
- By‑products: An additional $87m arrangement to sell gold and silver by‑products to Triple Flag was reported to rank equally with the Glencore offtake.
Orion has said the company selected contractors and advanced engineering plans during the period while the offtake agreements were being finalised. It added that operational readiness and detailed engineering work have been the focus ahead of the drawdown.
Project scale and local implications
Prieska is a brownfields project in the Northern Cape that Orion scoped to deliver about 22,000 tonnes of copper and 65,000 tonnes of zinc per year at full development. The staged approach — targeting higher‑grade, shallower ore first — is intended to generate early cash flow to support the more capital‑intensive Deeps stage.
Locally, the conditional release of funds and the move to construction may mean increased activity around Prieska in the coming months: site mobilisation, accommodation works and hiring for construction and mine services were signalled as immediate priorities. Orion said it expected an initial drawdown of the tranche before month‑end to permit contracts to be executed and crews to mobilise.
Orion’s shares saw upward movement after the announcement in Johannesburg, the company noted. The miner has had a mixed run recently: it was added to the ASX All Ordinaries index, which can draw passive funds, but it also lost a cornerstone investor when Tembo Capital Management withdrew its support.
| Item | Value / Timing |
|---|---|
| Tranche A (Glencore) | $40m — unconditional |
| Tranche B (Glencore) | $210m — subject to conditions |
| By‑product sale (Triple Flag) | $87m — ranks equally with Glencore offtake |
| Target first metal (Uppers) | End of 2027 |
Orion emphasised that exploration will continue alongside development, with targets at depth to be assessed once access improves. The company framed the Uppers phase as a stepping stone to the deeper resource, noting that unlocking the Deeps is central to delivering the project’s longer‑term production profile.
For residents and stakeholders in Prieska and the wider Northern Cape, the announcement represents a shift from planning to executable work packages on a project that has long loomed over the local mining landscape. Orion’s next announcements, particularly concerning tranche B and any additional South African partners or lenders, will determine how quickly the Deeps can proceed and how sustained the local economic benefits will be.
