Lavender Hill, Cape Town — Police responding to a late-night shooting in Lavender Hill were met with gunfire and a barrage of stones after finding a man fatally wounded, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said.

Incident and response

SAPS said the fatal shooting occurred on 24 September 2026 at about 23:00 on St Boniface Street in St Montague Village. The victim, a 47-year-old man, was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was declared deceased by paramedics at the scene.

When officers from Steenberg police arrived they encountered barricades on the street that prevented access. A group of unidentified people began throwing stones at police and their vehicles, while an unidentified group of males reportedly fired multiple shots at members on duty, according to a SAPS statement.

"The situation escalated and members were exposed to an immediate threat to their safety. SAPS members took action to disperse the crowd," Captain FC Van Wyk said.

Additional police resources were deployed to secure the scene, including Public Order Policing (POPS), the Anti‑Gang Unit (AGU), the Flying Squad and Operation Prosper. SAPS said the combined units assisted in stabilising and securing the area.

Damages and charges

No members of the public or police officers were reported injured, SAPS said. A police vehicle sustained damage described by the service: the windscreen was cracked and the roof, left rear passenger door and bonnet were damaged.

Police have opened several cases in connection with the events, including a murder docket for the fatal shooting and separate cases for an attack on police, attempted murder and malicious damage to property.

Context and policing challenges

SAPS described the motive for the killing as believed to be gang-related. The involvement of the Anti‑Gang Unit and the rapid deployment of multiple specialised units underline the persistent threat that organised gang activity poses in parts of the Cape Peninsula.

  • Street barricading prevented immediate access to the scene.
  • Police reported simultaneous stone‑throwing and shooting at members.
  • No injuries were reported among police or other members of the public.

The violent reaction to police at the scene will be scrutinised by investigators as they pursue both those responsible for the murder and those who assaulted officers and damaged police property. The opening of an attempted murder case in relation to shots fired at police indicates SAPS intends to pursue accountability for attacks on law‑enforcement personnel as well as for the killing.

Investigations into gang‑related killings in the Western Cape frequently involve multiple agencies and can include ballistics, forensics and intelligence work by specialised SAPS units—processes that can take weeks or months before arrests or charges are announced.

SAPS urged anyone with information relating to the shooting or the subsequent attack on police to come forward to assist investigators. At the time of the statement, no arrests had been reported in connection with the murder or the assaults on officers.

The incident adds to broader concerns about the safety of police officers when attending scenes in gang‑affected areas and the risks posed by community barricades and collective attacks that can hinder emergency access and investigations.
