Professor Blade Nzimande, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, warned that South Africa will not reach its full potential unless women and girls are fully included in the country’s science, technology and innovation (STI) system.
Addressing structural gaps in the science system
Speaking at the 23rd South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA), held under the theme “Placing women at the centre of science, technology and innovation”, Nzimande said persistent structural inequalities continue to limit women’s progress in research and technology.

Nzimande highlighted that, despite gains in university enrolments, academic workforce numbers and national research posts, the transformation of South Africa’s research ecosystem is incomplete. He also pointed to the heavy burdens on early-career researchers — such as intense teaching loads and limited research time — that disproportionately affect women.
