Firefighters, nurses and other professionals visited Likhweti Primary School on 14 August to give Grade R learners hands-on introductions to a variety of careers, organisers said. The event aimed to expand children’s awareness of job roles and public-service responsibilities at an early age.

Bringing jobs to the classroom

The interactive career day was staged for the school’s youngest learners, who were able to ask questions and see equipment used in different occupations. Presenters described their daily responsibilities and the contribution their work makes to local communities, organisers reported.

Teachers said the activity was designed to help children start forming ideas about what they might like to do in future, and to show that careers can be reached through education and determination.

“This is a way of preparing our learners for the future. Even at Grade R level, we need to expose them to different careers so that they can start understanding what they would like to become one day,” said teacher Londi Mathebula.

Another teacher, Cynthia Mabuza, emphasised how early inspiration can broaden children’s ambitions.

“When we expose children to different professions while they are still young, we open their minds to possibilities. They can begin to dream, ask questions and understand that with education and determination, they can achieve their goals,” said Mabuza.

What the children saw and learned

Organisers said firefighters demonstrated basic fire-safety messages, described their roles during emergencies and highlighted the importance of helping people in dangerous situations. Nurses introduced learners to elements of primary healthcare and explained how they care for patients and support healthy communities.

Teachers and organisers encouraged active participation, allowing the Grade R learners to ask questions and interact with the visitors. Photographs taken during the day showed eager children in learning circles with the presenters.

Why early career exposure matters

Educational research and local teachers often point to several benefits from introducing career concepts in the early school years. These include:

  • Broadening children’s awareness of possible futures and reducing stereotypes about who can do which job.
  • Linking basic school learning to real-world applications, which can boost motivation to attend and engage in school.
  • Encouraging curiosity and early questions about education pathways, subjects and skills required for different careers.

For communities in Mpumalanga, where access to resources and information varies between towns and villages, school events of this nature can be a practical way to make career information more accessible to children and parents.

Practical steps for parents and schools

Teachers said simple, low-cost activities can extend the benefits of a career day throughout the year. Suggestions shared by educators included organising regular visits from local professionals, using storybooks and role-play to explore occupations, and encouraging conversations at home about the jobs family members do.

Schools planning similar events should consider inviting a cross-section of workers — public-service staff, health practitioners, artisans and small-business owners — to ensure learners see a wide range of pathways into employment.

Organisers at Likhweti Primary said they plan to continue career-focused activities for younger grades to keep learners engaged with the idea that schooling opens opportunities.

Photographs from the day were credited to an event photographer, showing the learners and presenters during demonstrations.

Members of the public seeking to support career education at local schools can contact their nearest school or the provincial education office to inquire about volunteering or presenting at similar events.
