The Utah State football program will open its 2027 season earlier than expected after the university and its opponents announced multiple date changes Wednesday.
Oklahoma game moved to Week Zero
What had been slated as a Week 1 matchup on Sept. 4, 2027, at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman has been rescheduled to Saturday, Aug. 28, 2027. That weekend is the newly created Week Zero under the NCAA’s standardized 14-week regular-season format that takes effect in fall 2027.
The Sooners will pay Utah State a reported $1.5 million guarantee for the game, according to the contract details released with the schedule announcement.
Other Utah State date changes
Utah State also moved its home game against Mercyhurst from Sept. 25 to Sept. 4, 2027. The Aggies’ remaining nonconference slate includes home games against Nevada on Sept. 11 and Toledo on Sept. 18, per the schedule posting.
- Aug. 28, 2027: at Oklahoma (moved from Sept. 4)
- Sept. 4, 2027: vs. Mercyhurst (moved from Sept. 25)
- Sept. 11, 2027: vs. Nevada
- Sept. 18, 2027: vs. Toledo
Why the changes happened
The shifts follow the NCAA’s June decision to implement a uniform 14-week regular-season structure starting in 2027, a change that expands the number of teams eligible to open in Week Zero. Previously, Week Zero scheduling was limited to teams with ties to Hawaii travel or certain television exceptions; under the new format most FBS teams may schedule a game the weekend before Labor Day.
As a result, high-profile nonconference matchups that were originally set for Week 1 have been moved into that earlier weekend. The reworked calendar is intended to standardize season length and the timing of postseason weeks across the FBS.
Local impact and logistics
For Utah State — based in Logan — the date changes carry practical implications for travel planning, game-week operations and academic scheduling. An Aug. 28 kickoff against a Power Five opponent will require earlier team travel and adjustments to the Aggies’ summer practice and travel plans that coincide with the new NCAA calendar.
The $1.5 million guarantee also carries financial significance for Utah State’s athletic department. Such payouts for marquee road games against programs like Oklahoma are a common revenue source for Group of Five schools, offsetting operational costs and supporting other sports.
What fans should know
Fans planning to attend the Oklahoma game should note the early date and make travel and accommodation arrangements accordingly. Likewise, season-ticket holders and campus stakeholders should expect the university’s athletic department to publish updated logistics and ticketing information as game day approaches.
| Opponent | Original Date | New Date |
|---|---|---|
| Oklahoma (at) | Sept. 4, 2027 | Aug. 28, 2027 |
| Mercyhurst (home) | Sept. 25, 2027 | Sept. 4, 2027 |

The schedule changes also included a separate adjustment between Oklahoma and SMU: that game was moved up one week from Sept. 11 to Sept. 4 in 2027. The SMU-Oklahoma shift was announced alongside the revisions affecting Utah State.
Looking ahead
Utah State’s football office is expected to finalize and communicate any additional operational changes for the 2027 season as the NCAA’s new calendar comes into force. For now, the Aggies’ supporters and administrators must account for an earlier high-profile trip to Norman and an altered early September home slate.
Further details on kickoff times, television assignments and ticketing are likely to follow from Utah State and the respective host schools as the 2027 season approaches.
