LUDLOW — Two people were confirmed dead Sunday after a small airplane crashed into a wooded tract near Center Street late Saturday night, authorities said.

Search began after aircraft reported missing

Massachusetts State Police, Ludlow police and other emergency agencies began searching the area after receiving a report of a missing aircraft Saturday evening. Officials located the wreckage at about 9:30 p.m. in a wooded area where several homes are nearby, according to law enforcement. The aircraft could not be seen from the roadway, and responders staged a large emergency presence at the scene.

Victims, investigation and agency response

Sunday morning the Hampden County district attorney's office confirmed that two people were found dead at the crash site. Authorities have not released the victims' names, nor have they disclosed where the flight originated or its intended destination.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified and dispatched teams to work alongside Massachusetts State Police, the Hampden district attorney's office and Ludlow police. Those agencies are expected to lead a multiagency inquiry into the cause of the crash.

"While we are devastated at the loss for our flying family, this pales to the overwhelming heartache for the family and friends of two very special people," said Christopher Hyldburg of Hyldburg Aviation, which said the victims and plane were affiliated with Alpha-One Flight Services.

Hyldburg, representing Alpha One, said the company is cooperating with state and federal investigators. He added that this marked the first accident causing injury in Alpha One's 38-year history, and asked for discretion and understanding while authorities investigate.

Local context and safety considerations

Ludlow sits in Hampden County just over 10 miles north of Springfield and roughly 80 miles west of Boston. Residents in the immediate area reported seeing a large emergency response on Saturday night. While no other injuries have been reported, officials continue to examine the scene and collect wreckage for analysis.

  • Crash time: About 9:30 p.m. Saturday (initially reported as a missing aircraft)

What investigators typically look for

In investigations of small-aircraft accidents, officials commonly gather wreckage, review maintenance and pilot records, examine weather and air-traffic data, and interview witnesses. The NTSB and FAA will likely determine whether mechanical failure, human factors, environmental conditions or a combination contributed to the crash. Those agencies typically release preliminary factual reports in the days after an accident and more detailed findings after a thorough investigation.

What residents should expect

Residents near the scene may continue to observe investigative activity and should expect temporary road or area restrictions as authorities process the site. Anyone with information related to the crash — including dashcam, home surveillance or eyewitness accounts — is asked to contact Ludlow police or state police investigators to assist with the inquiry.

As the multiagency investigation proceeds, officials will release additional details, including identities and probable cause, when appropriate and available to the public.
