Rohnert Park’s youth baseball team will remain in contention at the Cal Ripken World Series after splitting its group-stage games in Branson, Missouri, and earning a spot in the tournament’s consolation bracket.

Team stays alive despite mixed results

The squad, made up of players 12 years old and under competing at the Major 70 level, concluded group play with a 2-2 record. That mark did not win the five-team pool and therefore did not secure a berth in the championship bracket, but it qualified the team for the event’s consolation, known as the Iron Man bracket.

Rohnert Park’s path through the pool included a narrow opening loss and a lopsided defeat in the finale, with two victories sandwiched between. The club lost its tournament opener by a single run, 1-0, rebounded with consecutive wins and then was beaten 13-4 in the group-stage finale.

Coach John Hansen said the offense did not perform up to expectations but praised his players’ competitive spirit and enjoyment of the experience. The tournament setting has offered ample baseball while giving the young athletes opportunities to interact with peers from other regions.

“Our hitting hasn’t been as great as we’d hoped, but we scratched out a couple wins and one of the losses we had, we lost 1-0,” Hansen said.

Experience beyond wins and losses

Hansen emphasized that, despite on-field mistakes and the pressure of competition, the trip has brought memorable moments for the roster. Players have been exposed to a dense slate of games and the social side of a national tournament: making friends, watching other matchups and staying engaged long after their own contests end.

One informal tradition Hansen highlighted is teams gathering on the field after official play to enjoy Wiffle ball matchups. Those late-night gatherings have added a festival-like atmosphere to the event and given players additional chances to bond beyond the competitive schedule.

“It just seems like they’re smiling all the time. They’re having a good time,” Hansen said, acknowledging that occasional mistakes bring brief disappointment but do not overshadow the overall enjoyment.

About the Cal Ripken World Series

The Cal Ripken World Series is named for Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. and operates under the Babe Ruth Baseball organization. The Cal Ripken division serves players ages 4 through 12. The Major 70 division used by Rohnert Park is played on fields with a 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot basepaths, a configuration designed for this age group’s development and competition.

Rohnert Park will face a Kentucky squad in the Iron Man bracket on Wednesday. The consolation bracket gives teams eliminated from title contention a chance to continue playing meaningful games and extend the tournament experience for athletes and families.

Beyond the field, the series functions as a national showcase for youth baseball, bringing together teams from across the country. For Rohnert Park’s players, the remaining schedule offers additional competitive opportunities and the chance to close out the trip on a high note.

Coach Hansen noted the blend of competitive intensity and communal camaraderie has defined the trip, a balance that youth tournaments often strive to achieve. With more games to come in Branson, the team will attempt to build on its victories and learn from its setbacks as the event progresses.
