Martin Compston, the Scottish actor famed for roles in Line of Duty and Mayflies, has revealed that he spends much of his time away from screens in the Nevada city of Las Vegas — not as a party-goer, but as a father and neighbour. The 42-year-old splits his life between his hometown of Greenock and Las Vegas, where his wife, Tianna, is from, and where family routines such as school runs and dog walking take precedence over the city’s notorious nightlife.

From crime drama to domestic routine

Compston told reporters he treats visits to Las Vegas as an opportunity to switch off from an intense filming schedule in the UK. He described returning to Scotland from the US with a quiet, domestic mindset — favouring rest over the excited atmosphere his fellow passengers often display when flying to Las Vegas.

“I do find it funny getting on the plane heading back to Scotland, I’m usually sitting back and having a wee glass of Champagne, while everybody around me is broken.”

The actor said that, despite his heavy workload in British television and film, having two homes suits the family: his work keeps him chiefly in the UK, while a base in Nevada places him near his wife’s family and allows her to maintain her career.

A new travelogue with a local angle

Compston has channelled his curiosity about his adopted city into a new programme, Martin Compston: Living Las Vegas, which is due to air on Channel 4. The series takes a different view of Las Vegas, skipping the usual tourist tropes to investigate the people and places that shape the city behind its neon exterior.

During filming he spent time with well-known local figures, including Vegas entertainer Wayne Newton, and met Scottish drag performer Lawrence Chaney. He also gained behind-the-scenes access to famous local landmarks, such as the Bellagio fountains and private hotel villas.

Compston worked on the series with producer David Marshall, with whom he previously collaborated on the travelogue Martin Compston Fling, which saw him travel around Scotland and Norway with friend Phil MacHugh.

Why Las Vegas, and what he found

Rather than portraying Las Vegas solely as a destination for nightlife and spectacle, Compston said he aimed to uncover quieter corners of the city and learn how locals live. He took on a number of challenges and behind-the-scenes tours intended to reveal a different side of the city to viewers, emphasising domestic rhythms over glamour.

The series balances celebrity encounters with everyday moments, reflecting Compston’s own domestic priorities: when he is in Las Vegas, he says he prefers time at home being a parent to public appearances.

  • Age: 42
  • Homes: Greenock (Scotland) and Las Vegas (Nevada)
  • New show: Martin Compston: Living Las Vegas on Channel 4
Location Role for Compston
Greenock Primary UK base; home town
Las Vegas Family home; place where he films and explores the city

For viewers, the series promises a blend of celebrity access and civic curiosity: it shows Compston engaging with local personalities and institutions while also foregrounding the quieter responsibilities that anchor his life away from the screen. The result is a portrait of a city and a performer that avoids caricature and instead looks at everyday realities.

Compston’s approach — combining touristic curiosity with family commitments — adds a different tone to celebrity travel programming. It underlines how public figures navigate private life when their work demands long stretches away from home and how a place known for extravagance can also be a setting for ordinary, domestic routines.

The series will give UK audiences an opportunity to see Las Vegas through a less familiar lens, and offer insight into how one of Britain’s most recognisable actors balances professional demands with family life across two continents.
