Leisure Lifestyle has announced a packed programme of offers and activities to mark National Fitness Day, with free guest sessions, a reduced-price children’s annual membership and a steps-based challenge running across its leisure centres from 14 to 20 September. The national campaign itself falls on Wednesday 16 September.

What’s being offered

The week of activity is intended to prompt people of all ages and abilities to try something new and make a habit of being active. Key elements of the programme include:

  • Bring a friend for free: Direct Debit and Cash Monthly members can bring a guest at no extra cost to fitness suite and public swim sessions during the week.
  • Kids Fit Annual Membership: a reduced-rate annual pass for young people, priced at £99 and available throughout the week across all Leisure Lifestyle centres.
  • Welsh Three Peaks Challenge: a steps challenge at four centres — Caerphilly, Heolddu, Newbridge and Risca — asking participants to accumulate 11,250 steps, representing the combined ascent of Yr Wyddfa, Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan. The fastest male and female at each centre will receive branded bottles and sports caps.

Local delivery of a national campaign

National Fitness Day is run by ukactive and this year’s theme, “Powered by You”, emphasises the role individuals and communities play in making physical activity a part of daily life. Leisure Lifestyle’s week of activities is aligned with Caerphilly County Borough Council’s longer-term Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019–2029, which seeks to increase participation and improve wellbeing.

“National Fitness Day is a fantastic opportunity to bring people together and celebrate the benefits of being active,” said Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Leisure.

The council hopes the combination of low-cost or no-cost taster opportunities, family-friendly pricing and a community challenge will reduce barriers to trying organised exercise and inspire people to continue being active beyond the promotional week.

Who can take part and where

The free guest access applies to members on Direct Debit and Cash Monthly plans and covers both gym and public swimming sessions. The £99 Kids Fit pass is available at all Leisure Lifestyle centres for the week, offering structured opportunities for younger people to remain active over the coming year.

Offer Details
Bring a friend free Members (Direct Debit / Cash Monthly) - gym & public swim - 14–20 Sept
Kids Fit Annual Membership £99 annual pass - available all week at all centres
Welsh Three Peaks Challenge 11,250 steps challenge - Caerphilly, Heolddu, Newbridge, Risca; prizes for fastest male & female

By packaging these incentives together, Leisure Lifestyle is targeting several groups: current members who might bring friends, families looking for an affordable youth option, and people motivated by measurable, community-led challenges.

Why it matters

Public-facing initiatives such as this sit within a broader push to tackle inactivity, which local authorities and health bodies have long identified as a contributor to poor physical and mental health. Making trial sessions free and reducing the cost of children’s participation are commonly used tactics to lower the initial hurdle of joining a leisure facility.

The Welsh Three Peaks steps challenge is also an example of how councils and leisure providers look to blend fun, local competition and achievable metrics to drive engagement. Participants who enjoy the experience are more likely to keep using facilities, say campaign planners, which supports both individual wellbeing and the sustainability of community sport services.

Residents interested in taking part should contact their local Leisure Lifestyle centre or visit the council’s leisure pages for details on how to register for sessions, purchase theKids Fit Membership and sign up for the steps challenge.
