Community competitions draw large local entry and familiar faces

Bowling clubs across Kirkcaldy enjoyed a busy spell of fixtures and finals as local players savoured success at a number of recent events. Photographs from the town’s greens captured winning faces and runners-up from club and charity tournaments, while junior tennis in the area produced an 18-and-under winner from Kirkcaldy.

The Alan Gilmour Memorial Pairs at Kirkcaldy West End Bowling Club crowned Alan Hill and Billy Laing as winners. Runners-up were the pairing of Simon Bell and Gary Mackie, and semi-finalists included Mike Rollo and Ian Moir, with Alex Cormie and Gordon Fyfe also noted among those reaching the later stages.

Club team competitions and charity bowls bring big turnouts

Another highlight was Kirkcaldy Bowling Club’s annual Team Open, which this year featured 64 players and visiting supporters. The competition produced a final between Thornton Bowling Club and hosts Kirkcaldy BC, with Thornton emerging triumphant.

  • Winning team (Team Open): Thornton BC — Jimmy Forbes, Alan Morris, Kevin Fleming, Ryan Hunter
  • Runners-up: Kirkcaldy BC — Grant Thomson, Chris Cain, Ian Butchart, Brian Thomson
  • Third place: West End/Lochgelly combination
  • Fourth place: Dysart Bowling Club

Organisers and sponsors were on hand for prize presentations; Deborah Reynolds, General Manager of sponsors Rejects, presented prizes at the Team Open.

Bowls for charity on the Big Green

Age Concern organised its annual tournament on the Big Green, drawing 18 teams from Kirkcaldy bowling clubs and local Probus branches. The event combined competitive play with social fundraising and hospitality, culminating in an afternoon tea.

"It was a superb afternoon of bowling prowess and laughter, rounded off with an excellent tea and refreshments offered by Age Concern."

The winning side at the Age Concern tournament was Fair Isle Bowling Club, pictured with Age Concern representatives Kenneth Kelly and Ina Crisp. Runners-up were Raith Probus.

Junior tennis success keeps local talent in view

Outside bowls, junior tennis also provided cause for local celebration. At the Linlithgow Tennis Club Junior Open, the girls' 18-and-under title went to Gemma Filshill of Kirkcaldy, with Rachel Pang of Newlands finishing runner-up. The photographs accompanying the competitions place local sporting achievement in the broader context of grassroots activity across the region.

The recent run of events highlights the depth of community sport in Kirkcaldy — from competitive pairs and team bowls to charity tournaments that combine sport with social support. The photographs and results underline how club-level activity remains central to local life: bringing together volunteers, players and sponsors, and providing opportunities for players of different ages to compete and be recognised.

For supporters and residents, the summer schedule of fixtures offers an accessible way to engage with clubs across the town, whether by attending finals on the greens, following junior tournaments or contributing to charitable events like Age Concern’s annual competition.
