IMPHAL: United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Imphal on Friday for a two-day visit to Manipur during which he met the state's Governor and Chief Minister and visited several prominent landmarks, officials reported.
Meetings with state leadership
According to official briefings, Gor called on Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Lok Bhavan and held a meeting with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Chief Minister's Secretariat in Mantripukhri. The Chief Minister posted on X that it "was a pleasure to meet the Ambassador of the United States to India, Mr Sergio Gor" and said they discussed ties between the US and Manipur.
The CMO quoted the Chief Minister as expressing confidence that engagement between the US and Manipur would strengthen in the coming years. The Ambassador was accompanied by the US Consul General in Kolkata, Kathy Giles-Diaz, officials said.

During his short stay, Gor visited the historic Kangla Fort and Khwairamband Ema Keithel, the women-run market in the heart of Imphal. On Saturday he took a boat ride on Loktak Lake in Bishnupur district, described as the largest freshwater lake in the Northeast.
Officials said the visit was conducted under tight security arrangements and that media access to scheduled engagements was restricted. The Loktak visit included observation of the lake's floating island formations — known as phumdis — and the local fishing communities living in phumsangs, the official account added.

Chief Minister Khemchand Singh invited the Ambassador to the upcoming Manipur Sangai Festival 2026, scheduled from 21 to 30 November, and emphasised tourism and allied sectors as potential areas for development. The ten-day festival will promote the State's culture, handloom and eco-tourism, the CMO said.
