IMPHAL: United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Imphal on Friday for a two-day visit to Manipur during which he met the state's Governor and Chief Minister and visited several prominent landmarks, officials reported.

Meetings with state leadership

According to official briefings, Gor called on Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Lok Bhavan and held a meeting with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Chief Minister's Secretariat in Mantripukhri. The Chief Minister posted on X that it "was a pleasure to meet the Ambassador of the United States to India, Mr Sergio Gor" and said they discussed ties between the US and Manipur.

The CMO quoted the Chief Minister as expressing confidence that engagement between the US and Manipur would strengthen in the coming years. The Ambassador was accompanied by the US Consul General in Kolkata, Kathy Giles-Diaz, officials said.

Site visits and security

During his short stay, Gor visited the historic Kangla Fort and Khwairamband Ema Keithel, the women-run market in the heart of Imphal. On Saturday he took a boat ride on Loktak Lake in Bishnupur district, described as the largest freshwater lake in the Northeast.

Officials said the visit was conducted under tight security arrangements and that media access to scheduled engagements was restricted. The Loktak visit included observation of the lake's floating island formations — known as phumdis — and the local fishing communities living in phumsangs, the official account added.

Diplomatic and tourism signals

The CMO said the Ambassador described Manipur as a "stunning place" and enquired about tourist inflows to the State. During his meeting with the chief minister, Gor reportedly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on northeast development as "a positive step for a diverse country like India," according to the official statement.

Chief Minister Khemchand Singh invited the Ambassador to the upcoming Manipur Sangai Festival 2026, scheduled from 21 to 30 November, and emphasised tourism and allied sectors as potential areas for development. The ten-day festival will promote the State's culture, handloom and eco-tourism, the CMO said.

“It was a pleasure to meet the Ambassador of the United States to India, Mr Sergio Gor, at my Secretariat today. We had the opportunity to discuss relations between the US and Manipur,” the Chief Minister posted on X.

Itinerary overview

Day Main engagements
Friday Arrival in Imphal; meetings with Governor Ajay Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh; visit to Kangla Fort and Khwairamband Ema Keithel
Saturday Boat ride on Loktak Lake in Bishnupur district; interaction with local officials and delegation led by US Consul General in Kolkata

Broader context

The visit follows a brief stop by Gor in Darjeeling a day earlier, which he said was at the invitation of Rajya Sabha MP and former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla. In a post on X about Darjeeling, Gor praised the people and landscapes and said he intended to return.

Gor's engagements in Manipur come amid New Delhi's increased focus on the Northeast as a priority for economic development and connectivity. The Ambassador's interest in tourism figures and state festivals signals attention to people-to-people ties and regional economic opportunities rather than security cooperation alone, officials said.

Local reaction and next steps

State officials framed the visit as an opportunity to showcase Manipur's cultural heritage and natural attractions. They highlighted potential collaborations in tourism promotion, handloom and handicrafts, and eco-tourism.

  • Ambassador met Governor Ajay Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.
  • Visits included Kangla Fort, Khwairamband Ema Keithel and Loktak Lake.
  • Manipur extended an invitation to the Manipur Sangai Festival 2026 to the Ambassador.

Officials said the two-day visit concluded on Saturday evening after the Loktak engagement. There was no immediate announcement of follow-up visits or specific projects resulting from the meetings.
