Arson attack at tiny settlement prompts security response
IMPHAL: A group of armed individuals entered the hamlet of Kailenjang on Monday afternoon and set fire to three homes belonging to members of the Kuki community, local accounts said. The settlement lies about 5 km west of the Senapati Police Station along the inter-district border with Kangpokpi.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 pm, residents reported. There were no casualties, but the blaze and reports of distant gunfire caused panic, prompting some displaced and vulnerable families to move to nearby villages for safety.
Following the incident, heavily armed personnel from the Assam Rifles reached the scene to secure the area, local sources said. State and local authorities, together with security contingents, are keeping the volatile border under close watch while carrying out preliminary investigations.
Background: community history and displacement
Kailenjang is a small community of seven to eight households. Locals said the settlement had previously been displaced during the 1992 Naga–Kuki ethnic clashes and had returned only after local peace efforts. Residents said their reconstruction of homes and livelihoods now stands threatened again as tensions flare in the area.
Separate accidental fire in Kangpokpi causes heavy property loss
In a distinct incident on Saturday, August 8, an accidental fire destroyed a family home and three adjoining rental units in Ward No. 8, Kangpokpi. The blaze completely consumed the house of 75-year-old part-time carpenter Thangjangam Haokip. Local authorities estimated the loss, including structures and important land documents, at ₹1,34,94,500.
Four tenant families — identified as Nengneichong Touthang, 25; Lhingneilhai Haokip, 30; Jenneth Haokip, 23; and the Haokip family — were affected. When the fire began at around 7:45 pm, two children, a 13-year-old grandson and a 12-year-old granddaughter of the owner, were trapped inside while their parents were away. Local youths and neighbours rescued the children shortly before the roof collapsed, according to the preliminary site investigation carried out by local authorities.

Immediate implications and response
The arson has heightened fear among displaced households who had returned to Kailenjang after earlier violence. Some families reportedly fled towards Taphou Kuki seeking shelter. The presence of security forces aims to prevent further escalation, but residents say long-term restoration of safety will depend on sustained peace-building and effective local policing.
Local authorities have begun preliminary enquiries into both incidents. In the Kangpokpi fire, the site probe indicated an accidental cause, while the Kailenjang incident is being treated as a deliberate attack and remains under active investigation by security and police units.

What residents and authorities say
Residents described renewed alarm after the Kailenjang attack given the community's past displacement. The quick arrival of Assam Rifles personnel helped restore a degree of order on the immediate scene, but displaced households remain anxious about security and access to temporary shelter and relief.
Authorities continue to monitor the inter-district border and have urged calm while investigations proceed. Police and security units have been instructed to increase patrols and liaise with local community leaders to prevent further incidents.
The incidents underline persistent risks on parts of Manipur's inter-district borders, where historical grievances and recurring clashes have left communities vulnerable. Local officials said follow-up relief and rehabilitation measures for affected families will be considered after the inquiry is completed.
