Dhemaji, Aug 10: At least 12 people from Assam were wounded in an alleged incident of firing by miscreants from across the Arunachal Pradesh border at Mingmang Basti along the Assam–Arunachal boundary in Dhemaji district on Monday, officials said.

Where and how the clash occurred

According to a senior official, the incident took place in the morning in the Gogamukh revenue circle under Gerukamukh police station. The clash erupted after a dispute over alleged encroachment of land by people from Arunachal Pradesh, the official said. Preliminary information indicates that the assailants from across the interstate boundary opened indiscriminate fire targeting residents of Assam.

Casualties and medical response

The injured have been identified partly by name; others remain unidentified as of the latest reports. Those named include Durgheswar Patir, Rohit Dole, Nagaraj Dole, Biggeshwar Patir, Pame Pegu, Sanjay Tayung, Utpal Dole and Jan Dole. The identities of four other injured persons are yet to be ascertained, officials said.

All the injured were initially admitted to Gogamukh Rural Hospital. Seven were later referred to Dhemaji Civil Hospital in a critical condition. Of these, four who required more advanced care were shifted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital, according to officials.

Official response and inter‑state communications

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he has deputed a cabinet minister to hold talks with the Arunachal Pradesh government to resolve the dispute, while the state’s Director General of Police and chief secretary are in touch with their Arunachal counterparts to manage the situation.

“There is nothing to do at the state level as such. The situation has been promptly brought under control and the tension has been defused,”

Sarma described the episode as a “localised incident” while speaking to reporters at an official function in Sonapur. He also said that Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has been sent to negotiate with officials from the neighbouring state.

Security measures and current status

Security forces have been reinforced in the border area, the senior official added. Police have said further details are awaited as investigations continue. The involvement of multiple agencies—local police, state DGP office and the chief secretary’s office—highlights the administration’s approach to managing a sensitive interstate situation.

  • Location: Mingmang Basti, Gogamukh revenue circle, Gerukamukh PS, Dhemaji district
  • Reported cause: Dispute over alleged land encroachment
  • Immediate actions: Medical referrals, security stepped up, ministerial talks initiated

Wider context

Boundary tensions between Assam and neighbouring states have periodically flared up over land disputes, forest and village boundaries, and long-standing claims in parts of the state’s border tracts. Such incidents can escalate local unrest and require coordinated inter‑state mechanisms for dispute resolution and quick medical and security responses.

For now, authorities say the immediate tension has been calmed through communication between senior officials and the deployment of security personnel. Hospitals in Dhemaji and Guwahati are treating the injured while investigations into the origins and specifics of the firing continue.

Further updates are expected as the ministerial delegation engages with Arunachal Pradesh officials and police probes progress.
