Mawkyrwat, Aug 17: The Meghalaya government on Monday launched a state-funded road upgrade worth ₹140 crore for the 40-km Weiloi–Mawkyrwat–Rangthong route, a strategic link between East Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills.
Scope and funding
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation stone for the project at Mawkyrwat. The existing single-lane corridor will be rebuilt to an intermediate-lane standard, covering two distinct stretches: Laitmawsiang–Mawthawpdah (22.56 km) and Jakrem–Ranikor via Rangthong (17.44 km).
Sangma made clear that the scheme is fully financed from the State's own resources, saying the work is not aided by central funds or other schemes.
"This Rs 140-crore project is being funded entirely from the State's own resources, not from the Centre, and not under any other scheme,"
Timeline and deliverables
Officials said work will commence shortly, with most of the 40-km stretch targeted for completion within 12 to 15 months. The Chief Minister indicated the project was expected to be finished by or before Christmas next year.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong underlined that the upgrade forms Phase I of development for the route and reiterated the target completion in 2027.
Why the road matters
The Weiloi–Mawkyrwat–Rangthong road has drawn long-standing demands from residents of Mawkyrwat and South West Khasi Hills. Authorities say the corridor has gained importance after the reorganisation of local administrative blocks and the designation of Mawkyrwat as the district headquarters of South West Khasi Hills.
The upgrade is expected to improve vehicular movement and provide better access to essential services, including markets, educational institutions and healthcare facilities across multiple villages on both sides of the district boundary.
- Improved connectivity between East Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills
- Better access to markets, schools and health services for peripheral villages
- Aim to complete majority of work within 12–15 months (by or before Christmas next year)
Alignment and localities served
The upgrade will link Weiloi village (near the 23rd km of the Mawphlang–Balat road) and Rangthong. It will pass through or connect several settlements on both sides of the hills.
| Stretch | Length (km) | Notable villages/points |
|---|---|---|
| Laitmawsiang–Mawthawpdah | 22.56 | Weiloi, Mawteibah, Laitmawsiang, Pongkung |
| Jakrem–Ranikor via Rangthong | 17.44 | Umjarain, Jakrem, Mawkyrwat, Nonglang, Mawmerang, Rangthong |
Administration and next steps
The project was divided into two parts before the sanction of the second stretch, according to government sources. Work will proceed under state supervision and employ local contractors and labour as per routine public works procedures, the officials said. No central aid or externally linked scheme will be involved.
The administration has highlighted the expected ripple effects on tourism, agriculture and local trade as better roads reduce travel time and freight costs. With Mawkyrwat now the district headquarters, officials maintain that improved infrastructure is essential to service delivery and economic activity across South West Khasi Hills.
Further details on tendering, contractors and phased traffic management plans were not provided at the foundation ceremony and will be issued by the Public Works and District administrations in due course.
Implications for residents: The state-funded upgrade aims to shorten travel times to markets and hospitals, encourage movement of agricultural produce, and support increased administrative access to the newly elevated Mawkyrwat headquarters. Targeted completion in 2027 could align with broader district development plans.
