IMPHAL: The Manipur State Cabinet on Tuesday gave in-principle approval for the establishment of a Government medical college at Senapati, deciding that the new institution would have an annual intake of 100 MBBS students, an official statement said.
Senapati medical college and hospital upgrade
Alongside the approval for the college, the Cabinet sanctioned the upgrading of the Senapati district hospital so it fulfils the infrastructural and clinical requirements needed to be affiliated with a medical teaching institution, the statement added. No timeline or budget estimate for the upgrade or construction were specified in the release.
The decision marks one of the larger announcements from the Cabinet meeting held at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, Mantripukhrie, and is aimed at expanding medical education capacity within the hill districts of the state.
Assembly session: recommendation date fixed
The Cabinet resolved to recommend to the Governor the summoning of the Eighth Session of the Twelfth Manipur Legislative Assembly, and fixed 2 September 2026 as the date for making that recommendation, the statement said. The seventh Assembly session had been adjourned sine die on 18 March.
Higher incentives for international medallists
The Cabinet raised the cash incentives for sportspersons from Manipur who win medals at the Commonwealth Games and those who represented the state at the Asian Games, the release said. The revised rates will also cover athletes from Manipur who participated in the 23rd Commonwealth Games, Glasgow 2026.

The uplift is intended to reward elite performers and to acknowledge participants who qualified for major multi-sport events, according to the Cabinet release.
New sports promotion structure and appointments
The Cabinet approved the creation of a Section 8 government company to mobilise and manage corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds for sports promotion. The proposed name for the entity is Manipur Sports Development Foundation. Its composition will include government officials and non-official members drawn from the fields of sports, finance and sports science, the statement said.
In personnel moves, the Cabinet approved the promotion of L Shushila Devi to the newly created post of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sports). It also approved the appointment of K Chinglensana Singh, an Olympian and Arjuna Awardee, as Deputy Director (Sports Promotion) in the Youth Affairs and Sports Department.
Other administrative decisions
The Cabinet decided on a one-time reduction of the penalty for delayed renewal of vehicle fitness certificates for the period 1 February 2020 to 31 December 2025. The penalty will be cut from ₹50 per day to ₹10 per day, the release said. The meeting also approved the allotment of land in Kha Bishnupur to the All Bishnupur District Working Journalists for construction of an office.
The Cabinet meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand, according to the official note circulated after the session.
