Authorities act within 24 hours to provide metered supply at Tiruparankundram
MADURAI — A single-room house in Tiruparankundram received a metered electricity connection on Aug 13 after a wait of 17 years, officials said. The move followed coordination between TANGEDCO engineers, the tahsildar, the block development officer and local field staff, who erected a new pole and raised a low-tension line that had blocked a lawful connection.
A communication from the office of the Superintending Engineer, TANGEDCO, Madurai, said the work was executed under the Deposit Contribution Works scheme. The household completed the online application and paid the charges required for a new connection, after which the line was raised to the prescribed height and a metered supply was made available.

- Work completed: new pole erected, low-tension line rerouted, metered connection activated (Aug 13)
The Times of India reported that the family had long struggled without a domestic connection. The son, a Class X student, had been studying under streetlights. After the connection was activated, the family switched on a bulb that they had bought months earlier.
“Thursday night was the first time I studied at home and not under a streetlight,” said the boy, according to the report.
Local officials said the primary technical hurdle was a low-tension line routed directly over the house, preventing TANGEDCO from granting a safe connection. TANGEDCO engineers raised the line to the required height and erected a new pole before energising the metered supply. The authority indicated the estimated amount for the line-shifting work was remitted and that the family completed the online process and paid the connection charges.
According to the newspaper account, the panchayat agreed to meet the cost of shifting the line. A local leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), K. Kanagaraj, sent party members to assist the family following the publicity and provided ₹5,000 to cover connection charges and the caution deposit. With the panchayat bearing the line-shifting expenditure, the family plans to use the party assistance to buy a fan and light and to support the children’s education.

Civic officials said the episode began to move after media attention; within 24 hours of the report, TANGEDCO engineers and revenue and development officials coordinated the remedial work at Thiruvalluvar Colony. The quick response highlights the role of inter-departmental action in resolving long-standing utility issues, especially where public safety constraints — such as lines routed below statutory heights — prevent standard processing of new connections.
Residents and civic activists in Madurai said similar cases persist in peri-urban pockets where informal housing and legacy electric lines complicate assessments for safe connections. Field staff often need to undertake civil works such as erecting poles, raising conductors or rerouting lines before TANGEDCO can legally and safely provide supply.
For the family in Tiruparankundram, the immediate benefit is tangible: relief from nights spent under streetlights and the ability for a student to study at home. Officials said the local panchayat will account for the line-shifting expenditure and that the family’s remaining paid charges will cover the new meter and connection formalities.
Local administrations and TANGEDCO did not provide additional comment beyond the communication cited in the newspaper report.
