Administrative gap as spiritual calendar approaches
Gaya: With the 2026‑27 Buddhist spiritual calendar for Bodh Gaya due to open on 27 August, the state government has not yet issued a notification constituting the new Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC). The previous committee’s tenure expired on 16 August, creating an administrative vacuum at the Unesco world heritage‑listed Mahabodhi Mahavihara just before the peak pilgrimage season.
The BTMC is formally responsible for the upkeep and day‑to‑day management of the shrine and for making arrangements for religious events that attract thousands of Buddhist pilgrims from India and abroad. Ahead of the expiry of the earlier committee, that panel issued a calendar listing 37 religious and spiritual events scheduled between 27 August and 5 March.
Events lined up for 2026–27 season
The outgoing committee’s programme indicates a busy season with international delegations and long retreats planned. Key items on the calendar include a multiday retreat, international chanting ceremonies and congregations from various Buddhist traditions.
- Sangh Dana prayer: 27 August (season opener)
- 49‑day retreat on Shurangama Mantra and Ksitigarbha Sutra: 7 Sept – 31 Oct
- 5th Vietnamese Tipitaka chanting: 14–28 Nov (15 days)
- 21st International Tipitaka chanting ceremony: 2–12 Dec
- Several Tibetan congregations in late December and early January, including Kagyu, Nyingma, Sakya and Ladakh traditions

Officials temporarily assigned to manage routine affairs
Gaya district magistrate‑cum‑BTMC chairman Shashank Shubhankar said additional district magistrate (revenue) Paritosh Kumar has been deputed to carry out routine responsibilities of the heritage shrine until the state issues the formal notification for the new committee. The arrangement preserves continuity in day‑to‑day administration but leaves strategic and representative functions of a full BTMC uncertain.
"Till the state government issues the notification for the new committee, additional district magistrate (revenue) Paritosh Kumar has been deputed to discharge the routine responsibilities of the heritage shrine," said Shashank Shubhankar.
Local stakeholders and temple functionaries will watch for the formal constitution of the BTMC because the body plays a central role in coordinating with foreign delegations, securing facilities for long retreats and managing logistics during congregation periods. Several events on the calendar involve international participation, with delegations expected from countries such as Vietnam, Mongolia, Thailand and Japan.
Local consequences and expectations
Bodh Gaya’s calendar drives not only spiritual activity but also the local economy. Guest houses, guides, transport operators and small businesses in and around the town depend on pilgrim footfall during the August–March season. Any delay in formalising the BTMC could complicate permissions, security clearances and coordination with foreign delegations, although district administration has been given temporary charge of routine work.
Residents and business operators say clarity on the committee will help finalise arrangements for accommodation, crowd management and basic civic services during the expected surge of visitors. Officials at the district level will also need to liaise with state home and tourism departments for security and facilitation of international delegations.
As the opening prayer day approaches, parties involved in organising the season’s events have been urged to maintain smooth operations. The state government’s timeline for notifying the new BTMC will determine whether the upcoming season proceeds under an interim administrative arrangement or with a fully constituted committee in place.
