Aizawl, Sep 24: Security forces on Thursday arrested the alleged commander-in-chief of the banned Manipur-based militant group United Kuki National Army (UKNA) in Mizoram's capital, a senior police officer said.
The individual identified as Thangkhomang Haokip was taken into custody during an operation conducted by a joint team of the Assam Rifles and the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), Aizawl Superintendent of Police Zosangliana told PTI.
"Hoakip was arrested during an operation by a joint team of Assam Rifles and Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB)," Zosangliana said.
Haokip is accused of being involved in several crimes in Manipur, the officer said. A separate official of a central intelligence agency told PTI that searches were continuing in Aizawl for other cadres of the banned militant organisation, who are believed to be hiding in the city.
Operation and immediate follow-up
The arrest was carried out as a coordinated operation between a federal paramilitary force and an intelligence unit, indicating inter-agency cooperation across state and central levels. Authorities did not provide further operational details, including the precise location within Aizawl where Haokip was detained, the time of the arrest, or whether any weapons or documents were recovered.
Officials also did not disclose whether the suspect will be produced before a court in Mizoram or handed over to Manipur authorities for prosecution on charges linked to offences there. The central agency official said searches for other UKNA members were under way in Aizawl.
About the group and regional context
The United Kuki National Army is a banned militant outfit linked to violence in Manipur. The arrest of an individual described as the group's commander-in-chief in a neighbouring state highlights the cross-border movement and sheltering of cadres that security agencies have long warned about in the Northeast.
The development comes amid ongoing security concerns in the region and underscores the focus of central and state forces on tracking militant networks that operate across state lines.
What officials have said
- Aizawl SP Zosangliana confirmed the arrest and named the agencies involved in the operation.
- An official of a central intelligence agency reported that searches for other UKNA cadres in Aizawl are continuing.
Authorities have so far released limited details publicly. No chargesheet, remand information, or statements from the arrested individual were made available at the time of reporting.
Local implications and next steps
The detention of an alleged top leader of a banned outfit within Mizoram's capital has immediate implications for policing and intelligence deployment in Aizawl and adjacent areas. Local law-and-order agencies, working with central forces, are expected to intensify searches and surveillance to locate any remaining members and to recover arms or incriminating material, as indicated by the central agency official.
Legal proceedings and any transfer of custody to Manipur or central agencies will depend on charges filed and inter-state coordination. The absence of further official comments leaves several procedural details pending, including whether Mizoram police will register case(s) locally or if the matter will be handled through security and intelligence channels.
