Exhibition opens at Vanapa Hall to showcase Mizo landscapes and heritage
Aizawl: The Mizo Photographers’ Society (MPS) inaugurated a three‑day Photography Exhibition at Vanapa Hall in Aizawl on Tuesday to mark World Photography Day 2026, reported Akashvani News. Mizoram Information & Public Relations Director K. Vanlalsangi performed the inauguration.
According to the report, the MPS — described by the I&PR Director as the largest photographers’ body in Mizoram — brought together professional photographers, enthusiasts and those who derive their livelihood from the craft. Vanlalsangi highlighted the Society’s contribution to government initiatives, including its role in producing the Mizoram Government Calendar, which showcases the state’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
Competition entries and member inductions
The event also featured the distribution of prizes for the National Open Photography Competition organised by the MPS. A total of 567 photographs were received from 224 participants, the report said. H. Lalchhanhima, president of the Mizo Photographers’ Society, presided over the induction of new members during the inaugural ceremony.

The exhibition provides a platform for local photographers to present a range of work that, according to organisers and the I&PR Director, emphasises both scenic and cultural narratives of Mizoram. The Society’s involvement with government publications was cited as an important channel for publicising Mizo imagery beyond local audiences.
Why the exhibition matters locally
Photography exhibitions such as this serve several functions in Aizawl’s cultural ecosystem: they create professional opportunities for practitioners, encourage hobbyists to develop their skills, and help document the region’s landscapes, festivals and heritage for wider dissemination. As the I&PR Director noted, the MPS is a partner in state initiatives that use imagery to promote Mizoram, which can have implications for tourism, cultural preservation and creative livelihoods.

H. Lalchhanhima’s role in presiding over the induction ceremony underlines the Society’s ongoing efforts to expand membership and foster a community of photographers across age groups and experience levels. The National Open Photography Competition, judged and curated by MPS, attracted entries from across the country, the report said, indicating rising interest in photography in and beyond the Northeast.
For Aizawl residents, the exhibition is an opportunity to view contemporary photographic work that spotlights local scenes and social life. It also offers younger photographers a chance to connect with established practitioners, learn exhibition practices, and potentially access commissions or publication opportunities tied to government and private calendars.
The three‑day event at Vanapa Hall is expected to continue through the week, with prize winners and newly inducted members present for sessions and informal interactions with visitors. The Mizo Photographers’ Society has been positioned in the announcement as a key stakeholder in projecting Mizoram’s imagery and supporting those who make photography their profession or avocation.
