Aizawl — The renovated Mizo High School Field in Zarkawt was inaugurated on Thursday by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, completing an Aizawl Smart City Limited project built at a cost of ₹16.06 crore, according to a report by Northeast Today.

Facilities and access

The upgraded site combines sports, recreational and heritage elements. The project — described as having been started by previous administrations and carried on by the present government — restores the original name of the ground and provides new public amenities intended for both organised sport and everyday community use.

  • Main playing field: grass surface measuring 73.35 metres by 33.12 metres, seating for 310.
  • Parking: two-level facility with capacity for 80 four-wheelers and 47 two-wheelers.
  • Water storage and utilities: 35,000-litre water tank, public toilets and a security room.
  • Recreation and training: elevated jogging track, cycling track, cricket practice pitch, stage, children’s play area and an open gym.

Management, access rules and community role

Management of the refurbished ground will be handled by a committee that includes government representatives, members of the Zarkawt Local Council, leaders of local NGOs and the Principal of Mizo High School, Northeast Today reported. The arrangement provides free access to students of Mizo High School and Higher Secondary School, and permits the Zarkawt Local Council, local NGOs and the Zarkawt Presbyterian Church to use the facilities without charge. The Zarkawt Local Council has been entrusted with management of the parking area.

The facility is being positioned both as a neighbourhood recreational hub and as a training ground. Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation Minister K. Sapdanga, who is the local MLA, noted the field’s role as a prominent football training ground in Aizawl prior to renovation, the report said.

Heritage element and public memory

Authorities have included a small structure that replicates the original church established at the site by missionaries about 130 years ago, according to the report. The replica was constructed at the request of Zarkawt churches to preserve the historical memory of the location and will also serve as a prayer space.

Item Details
Project cost ₹16.06 crore
Field size 73.35 m × 33.12 m
Seating 310
Parking 80 four‑wheelers, 47 two‑wheelers
Water tank 35,000 litres

The state Environment, Forest & Climate Change Minister Lalthansanga and Health Minister Lalrinpuii were also present at the inauguration, according to the report.

Local impact and next steps

The refurbished ground is expected to benefit multiple user groups: school students who gain free access for physical education and training, local sports clubs that have historically used the field for football practice, and neighbourhood residents seeking open space for exercise and community events. The inclusion of formal parking and public conveniences addresses recurring complaints about space and sanitation at busy city grounds in Aizawl.

With management now shared between civic and community stakeholders, the site’s day-to-day operations will depend on the coordinating committee’s rules on bookings, maintenance and scheduling. The report does not provide a timetable for public events or for any fee structure for non-exempt users; those details will be determined by the committee and local authorities.

As a public space with a recognised historical connection, the Mizo High School Field aims to combine sport, cultural memory and neighbourhood use — a local investment intended to produce both recreational and social returns for Zarkawt and the wider Aizawl community.
