Champhai, Mizoram: Two men died and a third was injured after they lost consciousness while cleaning a rainwater storage tank in Tlangsam village in Champhai district on Wednesday morning, police said.
Incident and rescue
Police reported that the tank, used to harvest rainwater, was about seven feet deep and contained around two feet of water when the cleaning began. F. Hrangmawii of Dinthar Veng had engaged three workers — Vanlalpeka, Vannunmawia and Lalengmawia — to clean the structure ahead of the expected rainfall, officials said.
According to the Champhai police, Vanlalpeka lost consciousness soon after entering the tank. Two others — Vannunmawia and Lalengmawia — entered the tank to try to rescue him and also collapsed. The final man to enter, Lalhmingthanga, raised an alarm and nearby residents rushed to assist.
All three who entered the tank were taken to a nearby hospital. Vanlalpeka, 39, and Lalengmawia, 33, were declared dead after reaching medical care. Vannunmawia survived and was admitted for treatment, police said.
Rescue team observations and likely cause
Rescue workers who reached the scene reported that there was very little breathable air inside the tank and detected a strong foul odour. These conditions suggest an oxygen-deficient environment, which can be caused by decomposition of organic matter or release of hazardous gases in enclosed spaces.
Police said the tank was used for rainwater harvesting and contained approximately two feet of water at the time of the incident. No further forensic or laboratory analysis results have been released by authorities as of this report.
Local response and safety concerns
The deaths have raised concern in the village about safety procedures when entering confined spaces. Authorities have not announced any charges or determined negligence, and the investigation is continuing, police added.

Confined-space hazards: context and precautions
Incidents in confined spaces such as tanks, pits and silos frequently involve low oxygen levels or the presence of toxic gases. Emergency responders and safety authorities routinely advise that entry into such spaces should be undertaken only after adequate ventilation and testing of the air, and with proper personal protective equipment and rescue plans in place.
Local health and safety officials have not issued formal guidance related to this specific incident. Residents and communities that rely on household and community rainwater catchment systems often perform maintenance themselves; this event highlights the risks involved when confined-space precautions are not observed.
Investigation under way
Champhai police said they were investigating the circumstances of the deaths and would determine whether any criminal or regulatory action is warranted. No arrests or charges have been reported so far.
Further updates, including any laboratory analysis of air samples or autopsy findings, will be provided by the authorities when available.
The incident is the latest in a series of accidental deaths in enclosed spaces reported across the region and underscores the need for awareness and safety measures for routine maintenance tasks.
