Yellowknife RCMP say a routine traffic stop early this month set off a multi-jurisdictional drug-trafficking investigation that resulted in three people being arrested and charged, and in the seizure of more than $37,000 in cash and 133 grams of suspected cocaine.
Traffic stop on Highway 3 sparks wider probe
Police say the sequence began on Aug. 3 when members stopped a vehicle on Highway 3 near Yellowknife. The RCMP reported officers “could smell cannabis” and opened a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act investigation. Inside the car, officers seized about $13,000 in cash and 37 grams of marijuana. The 21-year-old driver was initially detained and then released without charges.
In the days that followed, local RCMP, with assistance from detachments in Alberta, Yukon, Saskatchewan and Ontario, executed searches of a residence in the Niven neighbourhood and a commercial property in Yellowknife that were linked to the investigation.
- Home search (Niven): seizure of cash and suspected cocaine; two arrests — an 18-year-old man and a 22-year-old man.
- Commercial property search: seizure of cash and alleged drug-trafficking paraphernalia.
- Subsequent arrest: the 21-year-old driver was taken into custody at Yellowknife Airport on Aug. 9 and now faces possession and drug-trafficking-related charges.
“Police reported they could smell cannabis, and started a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act investigation.”
Seizures and charges
As a result of the searches and follow-up actions, RCMP say investigators seized over $37,000 in cash and 133 grams of suspected cocaine. During the home search, officers arrested an 18-year-old man and a 22-year-old man; the 22-year-old was observed leaving the residence and was found with drugs, cash and a cellphone. The driver stopped on Aug. 3 is from Behchokǫ̀ and is now facing charges related to possession and trafficking.
| Item | Amount / Detail |
|---|---|
| Cash seized (total) | $37,000+ |
| Suspected cocaine seized | 133 g |
| Marijuana found in vehicle | 37 g |
| People charged/arrested | Three — ages 18, 21 and 22 |
Coordination across jurisdictions, local impacts
RCMP said the investigation drew on resources and personnel from multiple provinces and territories. The involvement of officers from Alberta, Yukon, Saskatchewan and Ontario underscores the scale of the probe, the force added. Locally, searches targeted a Niven home and a Yellowknife commercial property, both now tied to the ongoing matter.
Yellowknife residents will likely watch for further court filings and for more detail from investigators as charges are formally processed. The RCMP have not released names beyond ages and the community of origin for the driver; charges are described generally as related to possession and drug trafficking. The territory’s criminal-justice system will determine how the case proceeds through court.
For a city the size of Yellowknife, concentrated seizures of cash and suspected hard drugs raise questions about local supply chains, impacts on community safety and policing resource demands. RCMP said investigators continue to work the file.
