RCMP investigators in southeastern New Brunswick have charged a woman in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a youth that reportedly occurred at a summer camp in the Johnstone Point area.
Arrest, charges and court appearance
Mounties say the incident was reported to police last month. Earlier this month a 46-year-old woman was taken into custody at Port Elgin Regional School. She was later released on conditions and is scheduled to appear at Moncton provincial court on Oct. 7.
The RCMP charged the woman with three offences: sexual assault, sexual interference and indecent exposure in relation to a person under 16 years of age. Police say their investigation is ongoing as they work to determine whether other attendees at the camp may have been affected.
School board response and community concern
The superintendent and chief executive officer of the Anglophone East School District, Rudolph MacLean, notified families in a letter on Monday confirming an arrest had taken place at Port Elgin Regional School on Sept. 8.
"We understand that this information may be concerning for families and appreciate your understanding as the RCMP continues their investigation," MacLean wrote, adding the district would not be able to share further information while police continue their work.
School officials also indicated the woman has not returned to work since the time of her arrest.
