Waterloo team Ariadne tops international Airbus competition
An interdisciplinary group of students from the University of Waterloo has taken first place in the 2026 Airbus Fly Your Ideas Challenge, underscoring the region’s strength in technology and applied research. Team G-00SE, known as Ariadne, is a five-person, 100 per cent Canadian, all-female team whose work was selected from more than 1,900 students representing 60 countries.
The winning team members are a mix of computer science, business, geography and aviation students who developed a proposal that Airbus judged to have strong potential to influence sustainable aerospace practices. The competition — described by the organisers as a programme to "inspire the next generation to pioneer sustainable aerospace and shape a safer, more connected world" — offers students the chance to work directly with industry experts and to bring academic ideas into a commercial context.

Student perspective and educational value
Members of Ariadne said the competition offered a deeper, sustained challenge than shorter events such as hackathons because it required months of development and real-world thinking. In reflecting on the process, team members emphasised what they learned as much as the prize.

Singla said the team will remember the teamwork, curiosity and resilience the project demanded.
