RCMP are investigating after two toddlers were found in a lake in a remote northern Manitoba First Nation and later pronounced dead at the community nursing station, police said Wednesday.
How the children were discovered
Manitoba RCMP said the two boys, aged one and two, were located in a lake inside the boundaries of Garden Hill Anisininew Nation, about 610 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg. A family member found the children and First Nation safety officers brought them to the community nursing station, where they were pronounced dead, the RCMP said.
Investigation under way, foul play not suspected
Police said it is believed the boys were able to leave their home and make their way to the nearby lake. While investigators continue to piece together the circumstances, RCMP have indicated they do not suspect foul play at this time.
“The drownings have been devastating for the family and the entire community,” Sgt. Chris Hipolito of the Island Lake detachment said.
Community impact and response
The deaths have sent shock waves through Garden Hill, which is part of the Island Lake area of northern Manitoba. In small, remote communities, the loss of two young children reverberates widely: extended family, neighbours and local service providers commonly know one another, and a tragic event can affect many households and services at once.

What remains unknown
The RCMP statement did not provide details about how the children left their home, whether safety officers or neighbours attempted resuscitation at the scene, or whether any search or recovery operations involved additional agencies. Authorities say they continue to investigate and have not identified any signs of criminal activity at this point.
Support for the family and community
In incidents of this nature, communities often coordinate supports through local health services, counsellors and regional Indigenous or provincial resources. The RCMP's acknowledgement of the event's impact underscores the scale of grief a small community experiences after the death of young children.
