A Maidstone woman in her late 70s has died after a two-vehicle collision on Highway 16 west of Marshall, Sask., the Saskatchewan RCMP confirmed Tuesday.
Police were called to the crash at the intersection of Highway 16 and Range Road 3273 at about noon on Monday. The RCMP said the collision involved an SUV and a car; the driver and sole occupant of the SUV was declared dead by emergency medical services at the scene.
The deceased was identified only as a 78-year-old female from Maidstone, and her family has been notified, the Mounties said in a statement. The driver and sole occupant of the car was transported to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Secondary collision while police controlled traffic
While officers were controlling traffic at the crash site, a truck and a motorcycle collided on Highway 16. The RCMP said those involved were assessed by EMS and did not report serious injuries to police. The driver of the truck was issued a ticket for following too closely.

The initial collision closed Highway 16 during the RCMP’s examination, but the route has since been reopened to traffic, officials said. The investigation into the crash remains open and is being assisted by a collision reconstruction expert.
What investigators are focusing on
- Exact sequence of events that led to the two-vehicle collision at Range Road 3273.
- Contributing factors such as vehicle speeds, road and weather conditions, mechanical issues or driver impairment — none of which have been publicly confirmed by police.
- The circumstances of the secondary truck-motorcycle crash while traffic was being managed.
RCMP did not release further details about the identities of the drivers involved beyond the deceased woman’s age and hometown, nor did they provide a cause of the initial collision. The Mounties said the investigation is ongoing.
Context: road fatalities in RCMP-patrolled areas
In the statement, Saskatchewan RCMP noted provincial roadway statistics to date for 2026. As of Aug. 11 at 8:30 a.m., the RCMP reported there have been 55 fatal collisions resulting in 68 fatalities on roadways policed by the Saskatchewan RCMP this year.
| Metric | Count (to Aug. 11, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Fatal collisions | 55 |
| Fatalities | 68 |
Those figures cover collisions on roads under RCMP jurisdiction and do not necessarily reflect totals across all Saskatchewan highways, municipal roads or RCMP-and-provincial-policed overlaps.
Local impact and safety reminders
Highway 16 — part of the Yellowhead Highway across western Canada — is a heavily travelled route for local traffic, commercial vehicles and long-distance travellers. Incidents that close the highway can have immediate impacts for nearby communities, including delays for emergency services and disruptions to agricultural and commercial transport.
Authorities routinely remind motorists to allow extra space between vehicles, obey speed limits, avoid distractions and adjust driving to road and weather conditions. The ticket issued for following too closely in the secondary crash underscores how traffic control and driver behaviour can affect safety at an active collision scene.
The RCMP encouraged anyone with information or dash-cam footage related to the Highway 16 collision to contact the detachment handling the investigation. No further updates have been released publicly as emergency and investigative work continues.
This coverage will be updated as new information becomes available from police or emergency services.
