Bloemfontein — A 36-year-old woman was arrested at Bram Fischer International Airport on Saturday after airport scanners detected suspected drugs concealed inside the head of a hairdresser’s practice doll, Free State police said.
How the seizure unfolded
Free State police spokesperson Lt. Col. Thabo Covane said police crime-prevention officers at the airport were alerted by an Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) supervisor after suspect material was detected by a scanner at about 11:26 on Saturday, 22 August.
"Police officers who responded to the call were pointed to a hairdresser’s doll head belonging to the woman who was about to depart on a flight to Johannesburg," Lt. Col. Covane said.
Criminal Records Centre experts were called to process the scene. The doll head was opened and officers removed the material hidden inside foam. A total of 232 stones suspected to be rock (crack) cocaine were counted in the presence of the suspect, with an estimated street value of R300,000, Covane said.
During a subsequent body search, police allegedly recovered R93,220 in cash. The woman was arrested and a case of possession of drugs, with an additional charge of money laundering, was opened at Navalsig police station. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) will take over the probe and the suspect is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.
Context: a series of recent operations
The airport seizure comes amid intensified policing against drug-related activity across Bloemfontein. Police reported other operations in recent months:
- In July, during Operation Shanela II in Willows, two suspects (aged 26 and 27) were arrested and cannabis and cannabis-related products worth about R77,400 were seized along with cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales.
- In February, the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit arrested four suspects during operations in Heidedal, recovering drugs with an alleged combined value of more than R715,000. Among the items seized then was rock (suspected cocaine) with an estimated street value of R75,000.
Taken together, officials say these operations reflect targeted efforts to disrupt supply chains and financial flows linked to drug distribution in the city.

The use of legitimate travel items and innocuous objects to hide contraband is a growing concern for security staff, Covane’s account shows. Airport users and businesses that handle luggage and goods should be aware that:
- ACSA and police use scanners and trained staff to flag suspicious items; cooperation with security personnel is required.
- Any attempt to conceal illegal substances or proceeds of crime carries multiple charges, including possession and money-laundering allegations.
- Those facing such charges will be processed through the criminal justice system, which may include transfer to specialised investigative units such as the Hawks.
