Strong week for Vryheid High across academics, sport and community
Vryheid High School enjoyed a productive week, with learners achieving notable results in the National Eisteddfod, participating in competitive sports fixtures and engaging parents at the annual Grade 9 Information Evening. The school also hosted a community-focused blood drive, which school organisers described as “highly successful”.
In the performing arts, Vryheid High’s public speaking and debating contingent returned from the National Eisteddfod with several top awards. The public speaking team secured two Diplomas — the highest award on offer — together with four Gold Awards. The debate team earned a Silver Award. The school congratulated the learners for their dedication and said their achievements made the school "incredibly proud".

Officials said the Eisteddfod success reflects sustained effort from learners and the ongoing support of staff and parents.
Grade 9 Information Evening draws strong attendance
On Tuesday evening the school hosted its annual Grade 9 Information Evening. School organisers reported a good turnout of parents and thanked those who attended for engaging with subject-choice discussions. The event is designed to help learners and caregivers make informed decisions about subject combinations as pupils progress into senior phase studies.
Sporting fixtures: mixed results but lessons gained
It was a busy week on the sports field. The boys’ cricket sides met Hoërskool Pionier in two fixtures midweek, while the girls’ cricket team travelled to Pongola. Local soccer fixtures against Hope High School produced a standout performance from the girls’ first team.
- Cricket (vs Hoërskool Pionier): U/15 boys lost by seven wickets; First XI boys lost by five wickets.
- Girls’ cricket: away to Pongola Akademie — defeat, but noted as valuable experience.
- Soccer (vs Hope High School): First girls won 5-3; U/15 boys lost 0-1; Second boys lost 0-2; First boys lost 0-2.
The school praised sportsmanship and determination across all teams, saying the fixtures offered opportunities for growth and development despite some unfavourable scores.

Blood drive provides community benefit
Thursday’s blood drive at the school was described as "highly successful" in the school bulletin. While organisers did not publish the exact number of donors, they thanked learners, parents and staff who took part. Blood drives at schools are a critical community service in rural and semi-rural areas like Vryheid, where donor units can directly support local hospitals and clinics.
School leaders thanked parents and staff for their continued support, noting that active parental involvement remains important to learner success both inside and outside the classroom. They urged continued community engagement as learners move into the latter part of the academic year.
Vryheid High’s combination of cultural, sporting and community activities this week underlines the school’s broader role in town life: developing confident public speakers and debaters, offering competitive sporting opportunities, and providing practical community services.
