Mpumalanga police have opened a murder investigation after six bodies believed to be those of suspected illegal miners were discovered on a mountain in Mashobote, in the Ngodwana policing area.

Authorities were alerted at around 11:00 on Saturday when a member of the community reported seeing what appeared to be human remains on the mountain. Members of the SAPS Illicit Mining Team were dispatched to the scene and confirmed that the six victims had died from gunshot wounds, said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise confirmed that a dedicated team of detectives has been assigned to the case and that investigations are continuing to establish exactly what occurred.
