A senior SAPS officer attached to the provincial Tactical Response Team has been killed in a shootout in Knysna during an operation connected to an ongoing probe into several recent political murders, Western Cape police confirmed on Wednesday.

Police said the operation took place shortly after midnight when officers acted on information about illegal firearms at the Sewende Laan informal settlement on Uniondale Road. During the exchange of gunfire a 50-year-old SAPS captain and a 38-year-old man were fatally wounded. Two firearms were recovered at the scene.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi offered condolences to the officer’s family and colleagues. SAPS provided psychosocial support to the members who responded to the incident and to the captain’s colleagues based in Cape Town.

Police said the captain had been deployed to assist ongoing investigations into the killings of former Knysna mayor and councillor Aubrey Tsengwa and two other men, Mandla Tyololo and Mandla Matiwane. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia visited Knysna on 25 August to receive a briefing from SAPS officials and to meet local leaders.
