A 29-year-old man accused of murdering and raping a seven-year-old girl in Phahameng, Bultfontein, will remain in custody after abandoning his bail application, Free State police said.
Arrest and court status
Free State police spokesperson Capt. Lorraine Earle said officers were summoned to a shack in Phahameng on 9 August 2026, where they found the child with visible injuries to her neck. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
Earle said the suspect was traced to a nearby farm and was arrested on scene. The accused abandoned his bail application and will remain in custody until 29 September 2026.
Police investigation and immediate response
Investigations began immediately after the discovery of the body, the police spokesperson said. The case has been opened and is being handled as a murder and rape investigation. No further procedural or evidential details were released by police at the time of the media statement.
Wider concerns about crimes against children in the Free State
The Bultfontein case comes amid mounting concern about sexual offences and killings of children in the province. Herna Els, head of the Free State family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit, said there had been several recent cases where children were murdered after being sexually violated.
“There are such incidents now and then. A little while ago, we had the Glenn cases also where two children were killed, and one of them was sexually violated as well,”
Els warned that parents or caregivers are sometimes the perpetrators, whether biological or step-parents, and highlighted an alarming trend of very young children being targeted. She said investigators were seeing victims aged two, three and four among recent cases.
Role of smartphones and delayed reporting
Els identified the increasing availability of smartphones and unmonitored internet access as contributing factors. She said paedophiles often pose as peers on social media platforms and that lack of parental monitoring creates opportunities for exploitation.
Investigators also face challenges from delayed reporting. Els noted that victims — particularly younger children — may remain silent for days, weeks or longer, and that young children can struggle to recount traumatic experiences to forensic social workers.
Areas of concern named by investigators
Els named several areas in and around Mangaung where child sexual offences are a particular worry:
- Bloemspruit
- Phahameng
- Kagisanong
- Botshabelo
- Thaba Nchu
What happens next
The accused will remain in custody until the scheduled appearance on 29 September 2026. The police and FCS unit are conducting further investigative work; any decisions about additional charges, evidence submitted to the NPA, or forensic outcomes will be announced by authorities when available.

Community impact and reporting
Offences against children reverberate through families and communities; prompt reporting and sensitively handled forensic support are crucial to both securing evidence and protecting other potential victims. The FCS unit’s warnings about delayed reporting and online risks underscore the need for caregivers to monitor children’s internet use and to seek help quickly if abuse is suspected.
The investigation in Bultfontein is ongoing. Police and specialist units will provide further updates as enquiries progress and as court processes unfold.
