TWEELING — A woman who had disembarked from a vehicle in Tweeling on Tuesday evening was shot dead, and the man accused of the killing was later fatally wounded in a shootout with police, Free State police confirmed.

What happened

Free State police spokesperson Brig Thandi Mbambo said the incident occurred on the afternoon in question when the 36-year-old woman, having finished work in Reitz, travelled towards a hiking spot and boarded a white motor vehicle. Unbeknown to her, the deceased’s former partner was in the same vehicle and had allegedly planned an attack.

When the vehicle reached 10th Street, Tweeling, the woman alighted. Mbambo said the man followed her, seized her and shot her at close range. The suspect then fled towards Reitz. Members of the public provided information to police about his movements, and he was later seen hitch-hiking.

Police response and fatal shooting of suspect

Members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit – travelling in a Mahindra and wearing civilian clothing – reportedly stopped alongside the man, who apparently believed they were offering him a lift. As he engaged with those officers, a second police vehicle carrying uniformed members pulled up behind the Mahindra.

According to Mbambo, the suspect drew a firearm and opened fire at the uniformed officers. The officers in the Mahindra, who were also FCS members, returned fire and the suspect was fatally wounded in the exchange.

Free State police commissioner Lt‑Gen Thabang Lesia described the killing of the woman as a “brutal killing” and expressed concern over the escalation of domestic‑violence related incidents.

Investigations and legal steps

The police have opened inquest and murder cases into the death of the woman. The circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), as required by law when a death involves police action, Mbambo said.

Investigations by Ipid are standard in cases where suspects die following interactions with police; these probes examine whether the use of force was lawful and proportionate, and their findings can lead to criminal or disciplinary outcomes.

Context and wider concern in the province

The killing is the latest in a cluster of alleged intimate‑partner homicides reported in the Free State over a short period. Police and provincial social development officials have highlighted the need to identify early warning signs of abusive relationships and to intervene before violence escalates.

Free State officials have emphasised identifying repeat offenders, monitoring breaches of protection orders, and strengthening co‑operation between law enforcement, the justice system and victim‑support services.

  • Victims and community members are urged to report threats, stalking or other signs of controlling behaviour to SAPS and support services.
  • Police said they rely on public tips to track suspects and to prevent further incidents.
  • Ipid will lead the independent probe into how the suspect was fatally wounded.

Practical information for residents

People who are at risk or who know someone facing intimate‑partner violence can report incidents at their nearest police station and contact local victim‑support organisations. Protection orders remain an important legal tool; breaches should be reported immediately so that police can act.

The names of the deceased and the suspect have not been released by police in the initial statements. Further details will be made available as the investigations by SAPS and Ipid proceed.

This incident underscores the intersection between domestic violence and public safety, and the accountability mechanisms that follow police use of lethal force. Ipid’s findings will be key to determining whether police conduct complied with legal standards.

Reporting on developments will continue as investigators release more information.
