JOHANNESBURG — The Gauteng Department of Education has received 805,688 online applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placement for the 2027 academic year, officials said, a figure that represents 346,877 individual learners.

Verification first, placements later

MEC Lebogang Maile told media the application period closed at midnight on Friday after opening on 5 August. He emphasised that the deadline does not mean placement offers will be issued immediately, as submitted documents need to be checked for authenticity.

"The conclusion of the application period does not mean that placement offers will be issued immediately. Before placement commences, submitted documents must be verified for authenticity,"

Applications will be verified at school level and then submitted to district offices for quality assurance to ensure outcomes align with the options and documents supplied, Maile said.

Where demand is rising and what the department will consider

The department said the high number of submissions highlights where demand for public-school places is growing and where capacity will need to be reviewed. The MEC signalled that the province must rethink how learners are accommodated, particularly in fast-growing communities where schools are already under pressure.

Among the measures the department is exploring are:

  • Maximising existing school capacity;
  • Public–private partnerships;
  • Mobile classrooms;
  • E-learning solutions to relieve pressure on physical space.

Key dates and what parents must do

The department set deadlines for outstanding documentation. Parents who uploaded or submitted applications by 4 September but still have outstanding certified documents have until 12:00 on 11 September 2026 to provide them. Officials expect to start sending placement offers from 15 October 2026.

What this means for families and schools

For many parents this season brings anxiety. Placement results determine transport, work arrangements and finances for school uniforms and books. School principals face the task of verifying documents while coping with the same capacity constraints highlighted by the volume of applications.

Education experts and the department have repeatedly warned that urban growth and migration into Gauteng puts pressure on infrastructure. The department's plan to explore alternatives — including mobile classrooms and e-learning — is intended to provide short- to medium-term relief while longer-term capacity planning is undertaken.

Practical advice for applicants

Parents and guardians should:

  • Check the online application status regularly;
  • Ensure certified copies of required documents are submitted before the 11 September deadline if still outstanding;
  • Keep contact details up to date on the application portal so placement offers reach them;
  • Contact the school where the application was lodged if there are queries about verification.

School managers must complete verification before applications move to district offices for quality assurance, which the department said is essential to ensure placement outcomes match submitted information.

Looking ahead

The department will use the application dataset to identify which areas require expanded capacity. While the MEC discussed short-term measures, any expansion of permanent infrastructure will require planning, budget allocation and possibly collaborations with other spheres of government and the private sector.

For now, parents wait for verification to conclude and for placement offers to be released in mid-October. The volume of applications has underlined an urgent policy challenge for Gauteng: how to deliver classroom space at pace in the country’s most populous province.
