BOTSHABELO — The Free State police will hold an official funeral on Saturday for Sgt Tshediso Lucas Semenyane (47), who died after a head‑on collision on the N8 national route on 12 September, the provincial SAPS said.

Funeral and memorial arrangements

The funeral service is scheduled to take place at Seemahale High School Hall, Botshabelo, from 08:00 on Saturday 26 September. A memorial service was held earlier on Wednesday 23 September at the Norman Doubell Hall in Heidedal.

What happened on the N8

According to Lt Col Thabo Covane, the Free State provincial police spokesperson, Semenyane was part of a four‑vehicle police convoy travelling to attend community complaints when their vehicle was involved in the collision near Sannaspos. The incident occurred at about 02:45.

Covane said the convoy included patrol vehicles from Kopanong, Bloemspruit and Heidedal police stations. The state vehicle Semenyane was driving was heading east when a white Toyota Quantum minibus allegedly left its lane and struck the convoy.

He described the sequence this way: the Quantum allegedly first hit the right rear‑view mirror of the first police vehicle. The driver of the second police vehicle managed to swerve to avoid the oncoming minibus, but the Quantum then collided head‑on with the third police vehicle, the one in which Semenyane was travelling.

Casualties and investigations

Sgt Semenyane died as a result of the crash. A colleague who was with him, and the 34‑year‑old driver of the Toyota Quantum, survived but sustained severe injuries. Both are receiving medical treatment in hospital in Bloemfontein, the SAPS said.

The provincial police have opened a case of culpable homicide and are investigating the circumstances of the collision, Covane confirmed.

  • Victim: Sgt Tshediso Lucas Semenyane, 47, attached to Bloemspruit Community Service Centre.
  • Date of crash: 12 September, about 02:45.
  • Location: N8 national route near Sannaspos.
  • Vehicles involved: Police state vehicle (Semenyane driving) and a white Toyota Quantum minibus.
  • Injured: a police colleague and the 34‑year‑old Quantum driver; both in hospital in Bloemfontein.
  • Investigation: SAPS investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Service record

Semenyane had served in the South African Police Service for 21 years. At the time of his death he was posted to the Bloemspruit Community Service Centre in Bloemfontein.

Date Time (approx.) Event
12 September 02:45 Convoy involved in collision on N8 near Sannaspos; Sgt Semenyane fatally injured.
23 September — Memorial service held at Norman Doubell Hall, Heidedal.
26 September 08:00 Official funeral at Seemahale High School Hall, Botshabelo.

Local impact and context

The death of a serving officer while responding to community concerns highlights risks that patrols face outside urban centres, particularly on high‑speed routes such as the N8, which links Bloemfontein to the eastern Free State and the border with Lesotho. Convoy travel is a routine practice for SAPS when multiple units respond together, but the SAPS investigation will look at vehicle movements, lane discipline and whether excessive speed or reckless driving by the minibus contributed to the collision, Covane said.

Community members and colleagues are expected to attend the funeral. The head‑on nature of the crash and the severe injuries sustained by others in the convoy mean the investigation may take time, as detectives reconstruct the sequence and interview surviving occupants, witnesses and the driver of the Quantum.

Practical information for motorists

Motorists using the N8 are advised to observe speed limits, keep lane discipline and take extra caution during night travel. Should members of the public have information that could assist the SAPS investigation, they are urged to contact their nearest police station or provide information to investigators at the Bloemspruit, Heidedal or Kopanong stations.

The provincial SAPS has not released further details about the condition of the injured occupants or the progress of the culpable homicide probe at this stage.
