Free State police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said the two men, aged 23 and 26, had been fishing at Aldenburg Farm Dam on 6 September 2026 when their canoe reportedly capsized. Initial search efforts on 8 September were unsuccessful, but divers resumed operations the following morning.
“The two men, aged 23 and 26, were reportedly fishing from a canoe at the dam when the canoe capsized, resulting in both men drowning,” Mophiring said.
Police divers entered the water at about 09:30 on 9 September and recovered both bodies from a depth of approximately three metres, Mophiring said. The victims are believed to have travelled from Potchefstroom to fish at the farm near Ladybrand.
