GolfRSA has been nominated in three categories for the 2026 SA Sports Awards, an achievement that places South African amateur golf alongside the country’s top sporting codes and athletes.
Triple nomination reflects on- and off-course gains
The federation received recognition in these categories: a nomination for Federation of the Year; a Sports Team of the Year nomination for the South African Eisenhower Trophy trio of Christiaan Maas, Daniel Bennett and Charl Barnard; and an individual nomination for Sportsman of the Year for Christiaan Maas.
| Category | Nomination |
|---|---|
| Federation of the Year | GolfRSA |
| Sports Team of the Year | South African Eisenhower Trophy team (Christiaan Maas, Daniel Bennett, Charl Barnard) |
| Sportsman of the Year | Christiaan Maas |
GolfRSA chief executive Grant Hepburn said the nominations were especially meaningful given the calibre of South African sport represented at the awards and pointed to the work behind the curtain that supports elite results.
“For amateur golf to earn three nominations at South Africa’s premier sports awards is an enormous honour for everyone involved in the game,” Hepburn said.
Development and transformation noted
The Federation of the Year nod recognises a period of strong performance across multiple levels of the amateur game, the federation said. GolfRSA highlighted ongoing efforts in development and transformation, including support for the South African Golf Development Board and the South African Disabled Golf Association. The federation also pointed to initiatives intended to broaden participation, such as GolfSixes South Africa and the GolfRSA 9 Hole Challenge Series, plus investments in education and safeguarding and creation of more opportunities for women and girls.
- International success: the Eisenhower Trophy result in Singapore that featured Maas, Bennett and Barnard.
- Development work: collaboration with the Golf Development Board and Disabled Golf Association.
- Participation initiatives: formats and series aimed at widening access to the game.
The Sports Team of the Year nomination follows the South African trio's performance in Singapore, described by GolfRSA as one of the game’s defining achievements this year. The federation paid tribute not only to the players but also to the wider network of provincial unions, clubs, coaches, administrators, partners and volunteers it said helped create pathways for talent.
What it means for amateur sport
Recognition at the SA Sports Awards places amateur golf in the national spotlight and serves as an endorsement of the structures that identify and nurture talent. For a sport often perceived as resource intensive, the nominations underline the role of coordinated development programmes and inclusive initiatives in producing international-class athletes.
While individual awards celebrate on-field performance, the Federation of the Year nomination highlights governance, leadership and grassroots work — elements that, if sustained, can deliver long-term benefits across communities and help diversify the player base.
The SA Sports Awards traditionally draw attention to stories that resonate beyond trophies: how sports federations organise, how they nurture athletes, and how pathways from junior to elite levels are supported. GolfRSA’s triple nomination therefore offers a case study in how amateur structures and competitive success can feed one another.
Final winners will be announced at the SA Sports Awards ceremony. Until then, the nominations themselves act as recognition of recent achievements and as a reminder of the collective effort necessary to lift amateur sport onto the national stage.
