HERTZOGVILLE, Free State — A 24-year-old man has been arrested after the body of a four-year-old boy was discovered in the Old Cemetery area of Malebogo, a township adjacent to Hertzogville. The provincial police confirmed a murder docket has been opened at Hertzogville Police Station and the suspect is set to appear in the magistrate’s court on Tuesday, 11 August 2026.

Police response and preliminary findings

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane said members of the South African Police Service attended the scene on Monday morning after a report of a body being found. Local Criminal Record Centre (CRC) experts from Welkom were called to process the scene.

“According to reports, the body of a child with bad injuries to the head was found wrapped in blankets and curtains,” Covane said.

Covane told reporters that preliminary investigations established the identity of the victim as a four-year-old boy from Malebogo. Investigators visited the boy’s home and located bloodstained sections of blankets, curtains and clothing that are believed to belong to the deceased.

Arrest and court appearance

The 24-year-old was taken into custody on Monday after initial enquiries linked him to the killing. He is expected to make his first court appearance at the Hertzogville Magistrate’s Court on 11 August 2026 on a charge of murder, the police said.

Police units in the vicinity have been active in recent weeks: Covane noted the area had recorded another incident earlier in August where a 42-year-old man — also a stepfather — was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder following a violent domestic event on 1 August.

Local context and public safety

Hertzogville residents and community leaders have previously expressed concern about violent incidents linked to domestic disputes. This latest case, involving a very young victim, is likely to heighten calls for strengthened social-support measures and more visible policing in Malebogo and surrounding settlements.

What the police reported

In the official account, investigators uncovered items at the residential address that linked the victim to the scene, including sections of bloodstained blankets and clothing presumed to belong to the child. A murder case docket has been officially opened at Hertzogville Police Station.

Provincial police did not provide further details about the motive or the precise relationship beyond reporting the victim was believed to be the suspect’s stepson; they also did not disclose any forensic results pending the ongoing investigation.

Next steps and community resources

The matter will proceed through the criminal-justice system, beginning with the suspect’s first appearance in the magistrate’s court. Police appeals in similar cases typically ask anyone with information to come forward to assist investigations. Community members with information can contact Hertzogville Police Station or the provincial tip lines if they wish to remain anonymous.

Cases involving children and fatalities often involve both criminal investigation and social-service responses. Officials from social-development departments, victim-support organisations and local policing forums are commonly involved after the initial investigative phase; the police statement did not indicate which, if any, agencies had been engaged at the time of reporting.

This article is based on the provincial SAPS statement issued by Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane and reporting of the scene and arrest. Further legal proceedings and police updates will determine the course of the investigation.
