Waymo said Thursday that it is expanding its autonomous ride-hailing service across the Valley by 55 square miles, bringing its Phoenix-area coverage to more than 350 square miles and adding parts of Chandler and other East Valley communities.
New service reaches closer to Chandler neighborhoods
The company’s announcement identified Gilbert, additional portions of Chandler and San Tan Ranch among the newly covered areas. Waymo also said Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is expected to be added as a stop in the near future. If that comes to pass, Phoenix would have the most airport access to Waymo of any city in the world, joining Sky Harbor International Airport and Scottsdale Airpark as local Waymo-accessible airports.
Waymo noted the expansion places service closer to its Mesa facility. That proximity allows vehicles to drive themselves directly from the facility into service areas, enabling them to pick up their first passengers within minutes of leaving the building, the company said.
“This expansion marks a meaningful homecoming for Waymo,” the company wrote, adding it returns with a larger, more capable service after years of scaling and infrastructure work.
What this means for Chandler riders
For Chandler residents, the change brings autonomous ride-hailing into additional neighborhoods, increasing options for on-demand trips across the East Valley. The announcement indicates an operational advantage tied to the Mesa facility: vehicles can enter service quickly without long deadhead runs from distant staging areas, potentially improving availability in newly covered zones.
- Coverage increase: 55 square miles added to the Phoenix-area footprint.
- Total service area: More than 350 square miles across the Phoenix metro.
- New stops planned: Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport expected to be included soon.
The company framed the expansion as a return to the East Valley, noting the region was the site of Waymo’s earliest trips, riders and community partnerships beginning in 2020. The latest service area map stretches into parts of Gilbert, Chandler and San Tan Ranch, illustrating the company’s continued focus on the East Valley as a core operating zone.
| Metric | Detail |
|---|---|
| New area added | 55 square miles |
| Total Phoenix-area coverage | More than 350 square miles |
| Airports with Waymo access in Phoenix | Sky Harbor, Scottsdale Airpark, (Gateway expected soon) |
Waymo’s statement emphasized safety and the scaling of its service, saying the larger footprint reflects years of "intentional scaling, infrastructure development, and continued commitment to safety." The company did not provide an immediate timeline for when service would begin in specific Chandler neighborhoods or a precise date for Gateway Airport inclusion.
Local commuters and residents who have watched the rapid growth of autonomous services in the metropolitan area will likely monitor how quickly the company populates the newly covered streets with vehicles and whether wait times and availability improve. The expansion underscores a broader shift in mobility options across the East Valley, where private autonomous services are increasingly part of the transportation mix.
Waymo’s move also highlights the logistical advantage of having a nearby operations facility: by reducing the distance vehicles must travel before entering service, the company can respond faster to demand in adjacent communities. For Chandler, that could translate into a more immediate presence of driverless vehicles in the coming weeks and months as Waymo deploys capacity into the expanded area.
Waymo’s announcement did not specify fare changes, vehicle capacity, or an expanded hours-of-operation schedule. Residents interested in service availability are encouraged to check Waymo’s app or public materials for updated coverage maps and launch dates as the company phases the expansion into active service.
