FREELANDER used Chery Automobile’s 2026 International User Summit in Wuhu, China, to present a technology package centered on artificial intelligence, connected displays and driver assistance. The British premium intelligent all-terrain brand demonstrated the features in its FREELANDER 8 to international guests at an event hosted by Chery.
FREELANDER is being jointly developed by JLR and Chery. Lucia Mao, CEO of FREELANDER International, introduced a voice assistant built on a large language model and customized for the brand. The system is intended to make conversations inside the vehicle more natural while improving the vehicle’s ability to understand users.
An AI-centered vehicle interface
The voice system operates as part of an intelligent cockpit based on Qualcomm’s SA8295P automotive-grade chip, which FREELANDER says is standard on every trim. The cockpit combines immersive three-dimensional graphics with four interface themes. At the same time, the design retains physical controls for functions that drivers use frequently, maintaining a mix of digital and conventional controls.
That combination reflects the broader direction of the FREELANDER 8 presentation: digital systems are intended to organize a large amount of information without eliminating physical access to selected controls. The company’s display system, called the Surround View Gallery, includes a 46.3-inch Mini LED farside integrated screen with 8K resolution. The display extends about 1.2 meters across the dashboard and consolidates seven core modules, including navigation, driving information and all-terrain status.
| System | Specification or function |
|---|---|
| Primary integrated display | 46.3-inch Mini LED, 8K resolution |
| Center screen | 15.6-inch display |
| Optional rear display | 17.3-inch ceiling-mounted screen |
| Vehicle computing | Qualcomm SA8295P chip |
Parking assistance remains conditional
For parking, the FREELANDER 8 includes Super Intelligent Valet Parking, or SIVP. The system allows users to park the vehicle and recall it through a smartphone application in supported situations. The company makes clear that availability depends on the market and that operation is subject to the system’s conditions. The driver remains responsible at all times.
That qualification is significant because the feature is presented as a convenience function rather than a replacement for driver responsibility. The smartphone connection extends the vehicle’s controls beyond the cabin, but the source material does not specify which markets will receive the capability or the precise scenarios in which it can be used.
Driver-support functions included
The FREELANDER 8 also comes with L2+ advanced driver assistance as standard, with more than 30 functions. The listed capabilities include adaptive cruise control, lane-centering control, automatic emergency braking and around-view monitoring with transparent-chassis functionality.
- AI voice assistant: Uses a large language model for more natural in-car interaction.
- Digital cockpit: Combines 3D visuals, multiple themes and physical controls.
- Parking support: Smartphone-based parking and vehicle recall through SIVP in supported conditions.
- Driver assistance: More than 30 L2+ functions are included as standard.
The presentation places the FREELANDER 8 within a vehicle market increasingly defined by software, displays and assisted driving functions. Its technology strategy links the cabin interface, vehicle computing, remote parking and road-support features into a single product experience. However, the company’s own conditions around market availability and operating requirements underline that access to these functions will vary by location and circumstance.
