Gartner on Thursday released its list of the top strategic technology trends for 2027, telling enterprise leaders they must broaden their focus beyond large language models to new classes of artificial intelligence, put governance around autonomous systems and design IT environments that can rapidly adjust as markets and operations change. The findings were presented at Gartner's IT Symposium/Xpo in Orlando.
Three themes, new priorities
The research firm grouped the 10 trends under three overarching themes: expanding AI beyond text, governing autonomous agent platforms and architecting durable agility. Together, Gartner's framework shifts attention from model capability alone toward the information, controls and infrastructure that surround AI.
Under the first theme, Gartner highlighted developments that move AI into domains that are primarily numerical, auditory or spatial. That includes:
- Large quantitative models (LQMs) designed to analyze numeric data for tasks such as financial risk assessment, supply-chain planning and energy forecasting.
- Speech reasoning models that interpret and follow spoken conversations, enabling voice interactions that can manage follow-up questions and changing context.
- World models that learn representations of physical and virtual environments to simulate outcomes before taking actions — a capability with clear applications in robotics and simulation-driven decision making.
Forecasts and implications
Gartner provided target forecasts for how these technologies could change enterprise operations over the next several years. The firm expects large quantitative models to perform about one-quarter of strategic forecasting and operational modeling tasks currently handled by language models by 2030. It also projected that speech reasoning models will manage more than 70% of enterprise voice interactions by the same year.
| Technology | Near-term forecast | Target year |
|---|---|---|
| Large quantitative models | Replace ~25% of forecasting/modeling tasks done by LLMs | 2030 |
| Speech reasoning models | Handle >70% of enterprise voice interactions | 2030 |
These shifts imply that organizations will need new tooling for data ingestion, model validation and operational monitoring tailored to numerical and sensor-driven workloads, not just text processing.
Governing autonomous platforms and durable agility
Gartner's second theme emphasizes the need to govern platforms that coordinate autonomous agents — systems that make decisions or take actions with varying degrees of independence. The advisory calls for attention to controls and oversight so organizations can limit risk as autonomy spreads across tasks and channels.
The third theme urges enterprises to build IT architectures that tolerate rapid change. Gartner framed this as designing for “durable agility,” meaning systems that can be adjusted continuously as business priorities shift without incurring prohibitive rework or risk.
Taken together, the recommendations indicate the next phase of enterprise AI will demand investments beyond model licensing — investments in data infrastructure, observability, access controls and governance processes that ensure these technologies operate reliably and within policy boundaries.
What CIOs and technology leaders should consider
- Assess whether existing data pipelines and observability tools can support numeric and sensor-driven models as well as text-based models.
- Establish governance frameworks for autonomous agents that include monitoring, human oversight and incident playbooks.
- Prioritize architectural patterns that enable incremental change and rapid rollback to reduce operational risk.
As enterprises weigh new AI opportunities, Gartner’s guidance signals that success will hinge on managing the entire ecosystem around models — the data, interfaces and controls — rather than the models in isolation.
