The Montana Motor Vehicle Division this month began offering vehicle title and registration services at select driver exam stations, allowing Montanans to complete multiple vehicle-ownership and licensing transactions in a single visit.
What customers can do at exam stations
Under the change, customers visiting some MVD exam stations may be able to:
- Complete out-of-state title transfers
- Replace vehicle titles
- Renew or replace vehicle registrations
- Handle these services while renewing or replacing a driver’s license
The expansion is being carried out in cooperation with counties that choose to participate; not all county offices or exam stations will immediately offer the new services.
Counties helped shape the rollout
MVD Administrator Laurie Bakri said the updated system was developed with input from county representatives, including officials from Missoula and Jefferson counties, chosen to represent a large and a small county perspective during development.
“So we had a couple of county representatives, one from Missoula and one from Jefferson County,” Bakri said. “So we took a large county and a small county and had them participate in the development.”
Bakri said participating counties were enthusiastic about the potential to shorten lines and improve customer experience at county offices. She said officials expect the shift to make county offices run more efficiently and leave customers happier.
Gradual rollout, county-by-county participation
The MVD will phase in the new services gradually, following the recent pattern used for changes to driver’s license services. Counties will only adopt the new exam-station services if they opt in, meaning availability will expand over time rather than all at once.
| Service | Available at participating exam stations |
|---|---|
| Out-of-state title transfers | Yes |
| Title replacements | Yes |
| Registration renewals/replacements | Yes |
| Driver’s license renewals/replacements | Yes |
Officials emphasized that the cooperative model gives counties choice over whether and when to implement the expanded services, and that the change is intended to reduce congestion at county motor vehicle offices.
What this means for motorists
For many Montanans, the change could reduce the number of trips and time spent at separate offices by centralizing related tasks. Customers who need both a driver’s license transaction and a vehicle title or registration transaction may be able to complete both during a single visit at participating locations.
Because rollout is staggered, motorists are advised to check ahead with their local county or exam station to confirm whether the new services are available before making the trip. Counties that do not opt in will continue to handle vehicle titling and registration through existing county processes.
Officials say benefits include shorter lines at counties
Bakri said county offices that decide to participate reported optimism about the effects on customer flow.
“And so if you go to the county, I think you should expect your lines to be shorter there as well. And so they're excited about the improvements that they have in their offices because now their customers are happy as well,” she said.
The MVD pointed to the county-led development process as key to ensuring the new procedures align with local operations and workloads. The division has previously moved to update driver’s license services using a phased implementation model, and officials say the same cautious approach will be used for the expanded exam-station services.
Motorists seeking the most current information should contact their county motor vehicle office or the Montana Motor Vehicle Division. As counties opt in and additional exam stations begin processing vehicle titles and registrations, the MVD will likely publish updates to help residents find participating locations.
This administrative change aims to streamline routine transactions for vehicle owners and reduce demand at county counters, but its ultimate impact will depend on how many counties choose to participate and how quickly the rollout proceeds.
